Beaverton lays off 7 workers: With construction-generated revenue hitting drastic lows, the city of Beaverton has laid off seven workers in two building-related divisions. The layoffs were in the city's building and site development departments, said Amy Miner, a Beaverton spokeswoman. Beaverton's building departments faced a $441,000 shortfall for the current fiscal year. Between 2005 and 2009, the city averaged a $286,000 shortfall. The deficits were typically made up from a contingency fund. The city deemed it to dangerous to use more than 50 percent of the contingency fund to atone for the current larger shortfall, Miner said. Cities throughout the Portland region are facing lower budgets for fiscal year 2010-11. Portland Mayor Sam Adams projected that the city could make 6 percent or higher cuts during Portland's ongoing budget discussions.
