As many as 30 tenured East Stroudsburg University faculty members could be laid off in the 2014-15 academic year as part of a plan to close a projected deficit, representatives of the faculty union said Wednesday. As of Wednesday afternoon, it wasn’t clear which positions could be on the chopping block. Those professors are expected to be notified on Monday and Tuesday, with letters hand-delivered to their offices by Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Van Reidhead. Professors will also receive certified letters at their homes, said Nancy Van Arsdale, president of the ESU chapter of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties. The university’s deadline to notify tenured faculty is next Wednesday. Layoffs would likely come from departments on the list of those considered for retrenchment plans, Van Arsdale said. Retrenchment could include recommendations ranging from reductions in the number of courses a department offers to closure of entire departments. Departments on the list are: chemistry, modern languages, movement activities and lifetime fitness, music, physical education, communication studies, early childhood and elementary education, history, philosophy, political science, professional and secondary education, special education and one non-academic department and the CAPS counseling center.
