Upon that last point we can totally agree. Gender, age and race should appear nowhere in the selection criteria. And yet they are constantly made the primary factors. Thank HR for that.

I’m not joking. Quotas [email protected] But bias does too. How about the person most suited for the role is selected? Not avoided because of age, amount of melanin in the skin, etc, and also not chosen to fill a quota for age, melanin, etc.

@6ncn- you must be joking. Try being passed over for positions because there’s a quota to meet. It happens all the time. Open your eyes and quit assuming things are owed to you for whatever reason. That happens everywhere too.

Not sure who made the original post but suspect it is a narcissist manager or delusional hr person. The behavior I’ve observed here is worthy of legitimate lawsuits. Trust me, I’ve thought about it. No values to brag about here. Real leaders at Conoco need to reflect on their own behavior and purge their own ranks for the sake of the business.

Every time I see the word SPIRIT, I laugh. COP has perverted this acronym so much. Its total blush*t, when the rubber meets the road, as pointed out in the examples in the previous posts. They even had the gall to call the new buildings Spirit 1 and Spirit 2. So fitting, as I go to the restroom at work and take a SPIRIT.

The OP misses several things:

(1) Our industry is cyclical, with periodic boom and busts, and as such, must have a strong severance package as part of a normalizing of compensation. Our severance is nothing spectacular in our industry, about middle, which is where they want it to be, in no way best in class.

(2) The issue is not the severance package, it’s management who should know how to manage: smart investments, plan for price downturns we all know come, and don’t go crazy with costs during the good times. Our management has been decisively wrong on all three.

(3) As someone noted below, there have been “payoff severance package” for short term executive hiring errors and other “friends of the ELT”. We all see the hypocrisy of this when management propagandizes SPIRIT values.

(4) The lay-off process has been chronic and inconsistent. Rather than “once and done” there have been multiple, proving there is no real plan, only a reaction to the immediate environment. If you were an average employee, but excellent brown noser, you were kept ahead of an excellent employee who spoke the truth. EOI was handled differently depending on the ELT member. The ELT cuts it’s size and then creates a subset simply to enable their chosen to get special severance packages and promotions.

Employees see this, morale and loyalty collapse, and the result is a huge value drop from us no longer caring.

Empty, hollow words that fill time at robotic/repetitive town halls.

If only they used the other spirit values when making decisions on what PEOPLE to keep. Lots of people with the INTEGRITY to speak up were let go. They felt a RESPONSIBILITY to do so. Some were let go who had INNOVATIVE ideas that management didn't appreciate because it challenged the status quo. And don't get me started on how those who step on others to get ahead are favored over the TEAM players. What a joke!

HR is really working hard to make COP look good with this post. Everyone knows HR always somehows survives layoffs. Most everyone know COP is a s***show company and has to buy oil instead of finding it themselves. What a joke.
