They do it every year.

Starting from ASE/PT (Fresher) who completes 1+ years post performance appraisal. They have do a minimum of 5–10% attrition or move the resources to PIP (Performance Improvement Program) and retain a few.

So far only Americans, in the US locations, have been laid off. From my area, 3 senior people with vast knowledge, which in my opinion should not have let go and would help the company move ahead.
So, the lay offs were not done based on expertise, experience, or knowledge taken in account.
The technical old-timers that are here, the few left who actually know the business, got the message that they are not really needed. It will be really hard for Cognizant to move ahead without some of these people if they leave.

cognizant had layoffs this week. I guess hobbies as defined by Mr. Humphries are stripping the last FTEs who were field consultants and sales people out in the field trying to break new business solutions that had real new business prospects. Cognizant just wants sugar high instant toaster sales. I have never worked for a firm that wanted strategic deals but had no investment in strategic sales people. CTSH will never hire 500 sales people because no one but college grads will go to work under such sales dysfunction..

Associates are prepared. It's going to be a tough 2 year journey at Cognizant.
