It is vastly important to understand the CIO - she was employed at Abbott Laboratories some years ago and was instrumental of firing IT staff and replacing with WiPro individuals. GSD, general service desk, was thus a joke. Indian techs knew nothing and having supported a local office for 8 months I guarantee it was a nightmare. GSD would take call, make 3 attempts to contact user and if not made, well then, problem must be solved and they move on. Took 9 days for them to route a ticket for support from one corner of a one-floor office to me. True. There were a few techs who knew their stuff, but mostly young and dumb. Pay was rotten too, below standard and damn near above minimum wage. So when I left, happy day indeed. Now CIO was fired a year later for wrecking the IT climate and structure — she sat on a beach with a cold drink for a spell and came into Johnson. She is repeating the culture, except Infosys this time. Maybe WiPro has nothing to do with her anymore given previous train wreck. Abbott also geared in with IBM Worldwide Tech Services, another joke relationship from the CIO. New CIO is trying, so he says, to change culture but Chicago management is old school fud dud executives.

I joined JCI to contribute to a company I was told valued their employees, with a history of family. JCI laid me off years ago and my JCI family was laid off over the last couple years, outsourced for savings and stock price. With this said, my JCI family, who are dispersed now, are the leaders of multiple organizations, while the company suffers from their loss. I saved JCI millions, getting out of an outsourced contract where they were being taken. We accomplished the mission and exceeded all expectations, but obviously that didn't stick, as they are right back in bed so to speak with the same group and others that cost so much, with very little return. JCI is not alone, look at any fortune 100 company and you will see this terms thrown out there "We need to focus on our core business and XYZ isn't core" You can fill in the XYZ with Accounting, Systems, Transportation, or whatever. When you hear this please look at you life choice, and make a determination to run, or get run over.

  1. The software developers which Johnson Controls' core business team outsources their work to (mostly folks in India) are paid something akin to US minimum wage. Therefore they have no vested interest in the company.
  1. The few US/EU based developers the company has are the type of people who will do software development for 30% - 50% less than the industry standard salary. Basically id–ts, lazy slugs, or people who have just graduated some don't realize what kind of company Johnson Controls is.

Since the outsourced devs in India don't actually care about the job, they literally break the products regularly (like weekly, no exaggeration) meaning the few competent folks who would otherwise be innovating or at very least re-factoring the literally 15-year-old code (They're manually importing .dll's, people) which the company's main product line 'Metasys' still uses are instead fixing other people's problems.
  1. Because (in my opinion) management has a rating of "2" on a scale from 1 - 10 in terms of technical ability, they have no way of gauging how their developers actually contribute. They simply pick favorites and treat their employees like school children, and anyone who talks without raising their hand is quickly shamed. They attempted to create a "metrics gathering system" to determine who the largest contributors are, and they promised their employees to release that data, but when the data didn't match up with their delusional ideas about how their workplace functions they swept those metrics under the rug and never mentioned them again.
  1. Everyone with authority knows the business is on fire and they're just there to collect a paycheck. Anyone lower than them on a hierarchy won't get so much as a hello. Hell, they even made all of their employees complete an internal survey which asked "how do you think this company is doing ethically?" And when the company answered "Not so good." The company followed up by making their employees play a modified version of the MMORPG video game "second life" that told them condescendingly obvious ethical information.

Ethics was scored lowly because everyone was aware of an incident in which an ex-President of Engineering was caught in an affair and his wife tried to k–l him at gunpoint. And yet they punished everyone else.

  1. Johnson Controls is a dying company, filled with nepotism and brutal in-fighting. The company will never fix these glaring issues.

If you were laid off from this place, consider it a blessing.
