This discussion thread is intended to serve as a "red flag" center for any/all updates surrounding layoff activities. Let us try to keep each other informed and forewarned as much as possible.

For outsiders: I would respectfully ask that you avoid posting here, in this thread. Your comments and viewpoints are more than welcome overall, but please respect those of us stuck in this situation by leaving this one to internal info exchange.

If you are employed with Cengage and observe lay-off related activity, please let us know here by including:

Your location (Mason, Boston, Independence, Field, etc. etc.)
Your general area (product, marketing, exec/leadership, sales, support, etc. etc.)
The nature of your experience, what are you observing?
Meeting called for XXX time
Telephone call scheduled
Co workers called into a meeting
Announcements, emails, etc.
Please share the gist of what was covered or what you observed.
Group meeting, all being let go, terms & conditions, paperwork presented for signage, instructions, etc.,
Coworkers being ushered out of the building
Remote employee conference calls, details discussed, etc.

The dedicated team took the hit (Arts, Pre Prof and Trades). They went from about 75 LC’s to 35.

That's an interesting invite. It is vague enough that it also could mean something like your manager was laid off and you'll be moved to another team. For most it probably does mean they are being laid off, but when people are laid off, the roles of the people who stay change, too, and they will need to be notified.

What is happening in the field? Are you being asked to phone in to an 800# at a given time?

This is SUCH typical Cengage - take all the advice about best practices and doing what is best/most sensitive for the outgoing employee ... then throw ALL of that out the window and pull something like this. How many people with appointments tomorrow are going to get a good night's sleep tonight, eh?

For those of you staring at unemployment tomorrow, just know this: you will one day look back at this time and call it a blessing. Some of you are going to say later that this is the best thing that ever could have happened to you. Ever wonder what former employees are talking about when they mock Hanson and the Kool Aid and the absurdity that is Cengage these days? Ever wonder why former employees are popping popcorn right about now?

You're about to find out.

I cannot speak for everyone, but I can probably speak for most when I say that I am sorry you are going through this. But you will be fine - and in pretty short order. I can also explain that watching the slow-motion crash and burn destruction of Cengage is like a very entertaining pleasure sport. The whole, sad truth is that the entire "changing the way the world learns ... disrupting the industry ... CU is an unqualified success ... we are doing it for the students!" is the biggest load of brainwash material you'll hopefully ever encounter in your professional lives. Cengage has been a joke out here for years and, well you will see.

You're about to find out.

From what I’ve been hearing it is invites from HR. Meetings start at 10am. I know people that specifically got a calendar invite from HR starting after 5pm today.

HR is on site at CLDC, so it makes a lot of sense that they would be sending invites. And they have always been directly involved with the laying off process.
And, let’s be real, the company has let us stew over the future of our jobs for weeks. I doubt their concern at this point is keeping people in suspense for a few more hours.

I can’t imagine that hr would send an invite and let someone stew over it overnight. They have to tell people specific things in a specific way. That’s why they are on the call to begin with. You typically will have a meeting with your manager and then they dial in HR. I’d be more concerned about your Manager moving your regular meeting up than getting a meeting invite from hr.

What is CLDC?

  1. S. I am the anon who started this thread originally (the Alert one) and I must say it wasn't meant to encourage teases and the kind of b.s. that is being offered here. If you know of something happening, state it - or don't bother speaking up. Who has received the invites, what areas of the company, what's the (general) source, etc. Stop playing games and get to the point. Thanks.
