My assumption is that the company let all the assistants go and then re-invented their jobs at lower salaries to save money. If money is the object then how is it that we ran on strict hours, got threatened with a write up if we went over, but when the district manager's boss is coming to town, they are able to use hundreds of hours in order to get their store in shape, and never get into trouble for it?
And could someone explain what market managers do? I know they tour stores, but of what value are they. If it is known that they are coming around the DM also have carte blanche with payroll.
This all leads to a bigger question. Are the DM's somehow able to hide their use of hours in order to get away with using them?

Pipe dream, who in their right investment mind would buy out such a disfunctional business. It is a terrible place to work and is managed from above to make money for shareholders. Just a little more payroll, manage inventory tighter, lessen the work load, these stores will thirve. Right now everyone is k–ling themsleves to run these sh– holes. I was laid off, my position was eliminated, then the atlm put in my place? not really eliminated right, just bs, what a shamefull way to run a business. Anyways, i am not bitter but thankfull, I hated working there. Your day or work load was never done. No one is going to buy out Big Lots, its destiny is closure and bankruptcy like sears and the other terribly run retailers.
Lol
It's a plausible theory that Bruce was hired to position the company for such a buy-out.

Why haven't I seen anything in the Media maybe it's time for the People who were let go at Corporate and at the stores. You Five Scum Bgs Cowardly had HR the Fools to make the Calk because you don't have the BALLS so why do they have you there as leaders if you have to have someone else so your job. I think they check these so call leaders to see why are they really doing this. I was happy my Son found another job to support his Family and I hope and Pray the others do and I Pray for you Five Scums for a Rude Awakening, Kick in the Butt and Karma and I believe in that. Good Luck
I managed a Big Lots for 10 years everything you say is true. But what you fail to mention is the amount of pressure put on Store Managers ,many or the Managers are they out the inflow of freight many clean the restrooms many set the planograms store are given a limit of payroll to produce result not to a realistic outcome. And yes from some unknown place hours come available if you should get a sold called surprise visit from regional
Vice President or corporate sometimes doesn't make sense to me calling it a surprise visit. Big in that sense is no different than other retailers. Yes pay grade is way to low but falls inline with the Dollar General and Dollar Trees of the world. About 10 to 15 year's ago a Asst. Managers was on salary was about 30 to 35 thousand a year, a bunch of them got together not necessarily at Big Lots and sued for various reasons and won being put down to 45 hours a week and a hourly pay of what they made on salary. One of issues then was now they could just leave whether completement of assignment or duty were performed. Well we all know what that led to. Bottom line I could go on and on about job I had enjoyed for a number of years then the almighty Dollar toke of you produced or you can be replaced!
"Market" Managers are totally USELESS and an unnecessary expense, as are many of the so-called "category analysts" that Corporate has hired over the past couple years. We don't need these folks to identify "slow movers," and revise planograms 4-6 times per fiscal year. Total waste of labor hours, which could be better spend stocking and assisting Jennifer. Also, your job postings on Indeed and other job-search boards are ridiculous (i.e. "Now paying $9.50/hr."). What a JOKE! Most of the other retailers, that Butcher Bruce wants to emulate, are paying $11-$13/hr. for entry-level positions. The BEST outcome for ALL of us would be for a couple super-wealthy investors to buy-out 51% of our corporate stocks (while the price is low) and take the Company private, and concurrently get RID of Bruce and the current Board of Directors. This formula has worked well for Meijer, Inc. and the Meijer family, whose stores are still making a healthy profit, after 85 years of PRIVATE ownership. THIS is the model we should follow, rather than making our shareholders richer and richer every year!
