Unemployment

Was wondering if anyone in California, is claiming severance on their unemployment???
I was told I needed to, but someone else said no.
I’m just trying to figure out if it’s a bad thing to not claim it?? Any help, please and thank you.

Yes you do have to claim it or notified unemployment on only the weeks you get a severance payment basically the amount but it doesn't effect your weekly claim/payment same for Washington State if you dont claim then they might slap a perjury claim against you

It wont affect you in California. I'm collecting unemployment and I let them know about my severance

I live in California - I filed for unemployment. I was scheduled for a phone interview and was told not to claim it because severance isn’t considered regular income in California. So when you certify you claim $0 as your income. Straight from the horses’ mouth. I love california.....

You should claim it.

Every paycheck you earned, YOU paid into unemployment, and in CA it’s your right to claim it.

In CA, your severance was designed around the assumption that you would claim unemployment, so to not claim it would be a loss on your part.

Remember COBRA assistance was just that, assistance. Benefits are very expensive and you will need all the help you can get until you get a new job.

Best of luck to you, Merry Christmas!

In some states you aren’t eligible to receive unemployment if you’re receiving severance. Be sure to double check

In California we are able to collect both. But I just need to know if I’ll get in trouble if I don’t claim it.
Thank you for your info. I’ll have to call and see...

in my state I gave them our package sheet and what they payout was and these came back what I could collect, I would recommend going there in person to avoid overpayment and have to reurn your money
