7 year employee.
I was a Sales /Inventory manager.
I’m being paid 2 weeks pay and that’s it.
When ,and IF ,my store reopens. I have to reapply. So basically I’ve been fired !
I was laid off on Saturday by an unknown area manager from New York headquarters. Not even the courtesy of a call from my store manager. To this day I have yet to hear a word from my “ team” of managers. I was a cafe manager and worked open thru close ALONE in the cafe for the last week as all other employees hours were cut. I was told I was being laid off and can pay 725.00 a month in cobra health insurance if I want to be insured. I was then told to file for unemployment, offered no payment for benefit days I had accrued in the 4 months I have worked there, and given no sick pay at all. They then told me the store manager will call me when they are ready to reopen and if they so choose to “ rehire you” you would be considered a “ new” hire and have to wait another 60 days for your health insurance coverage to kick in and the full 6 months again before you can use any earned benefits. I have never seen such horrible treatment of employees and this is coming from “ the largest bookseller in the country”. Dont bother calling me Barnes and Noble when and if you reopen. The hedge fund company that now owns Barnes and Noble are most likely going to file bankruptcy and cut their losses anyway once the pandemic is in the past,
I worked in Broomall pa store horrible place, incompetent management , white trash customers , in my opinion they are getting what they deserve.
Same here in TN. I’m using this time to secure a job with a company that’s paying their employees well and has their best interests up front. I feel bad that I stayed after seeing how the full timers were unjustly treated in 2018 . Everyone said, wait till it happens to you. And now it has.

As much as BN tries not to be Amazon, their layoffs and lack of care for their customers and employees during hard times shows what type of company they really are and Amazon seems to be winning. Amazon is hiring in a time when BN told everyone to work longer than they should have with the public and then laid them off when they were forced to do so and then deemed them no longer valuable. Part-timers always come up short in benefits all together in retail - not fair of course and should be changed - but BN hasn’t treated the full-time salaried workers any better than the part-time booksellers honestly.
Don't see how Barnes and Noble business model survives this. The lost business due to the crisis brought on by the virus will be a tough hill to climb, I'm afraid. If stores are forced to close by the states; the new ownership will either cut their losses totally or, best case scenario, may be that a small footprint of stores survive. My understanding is that a memo from the new chairman said that layoffs are very possible if this crisis lasts very long. Scary.
“ Staff should still receive pay during that time.”
Seriously?! They fired all the full time career employees to save a buck on health insurance! You think they’re going to pay all the part timers they hired to replace the dedicated ones they threw away?!
H E L L N O !!!!!!!!

“In other words please risk sickness and death to come work for us so we can turn around and cut your hours or lay you off and take away your Healthcare while you're on your death bed.”
They fired thousands in 2018 to save money. They didn’t care about them (after their years of service) knew they were going to fire them and lied to them, through Christmas, that their jobs were safe.
They did that. So, what do you think they’ll do here ?
Why are people downvoting this thread?
DO NOT BELIEVE BN
Here in TENNESSEE,They have not done a single thing to “deep clean”, disinfect or wipe down, our store. We , THE EMPLOYEES, mostly TEENS working PART TIME are wiping door handles and counters.
Claiming they will clean and disinfect their stores is a JOKE.
When I worked there it was the dirtiest lace imaginable. I was always washing my hands. Forget about the filthy customers who go to the bathroom and bypass the sink to wash up. Then they touch books, cafe tables etc. Never will forget when they had to unclog the 'honey trap' grease catcher from cafe that had is cap located in the middle of the History aisle. It overflowed and stained the rugs. Meanwhile they allowed customers to walk through. GOTAA SELL THOSE BOOKS! AND - magazines found in the bathrooms on the floor or stuck behind a toilet and then put back on the newstand.
Barnes & Chernobyl
To summarize the memo. We care about your health blah blah blah We are going to clean so you can still come to work because we care so much.
- S. We are going to take a financial hit so we have to cut costs again.
In other words please risk sickness and death to come work for us so we can turn around and cut your hours or lay you off and take away your Healthcare while you're on your death bed.
If they cared about the health and safety of their staff, community, and customers in any way they would close until the virus passes. Staff should still receive pay during that time. It’s terrible to see both their customers and their staff coughing and touching their faces. Books are unfortunately a very viable vehicle for the virus.
“ NOT because of bad company but because of the virus.”
Keep telling yourself it’s the “virus”.
BN lost A LOT of previously loyal customers ( not to mention fired employee’s family & friends) and have never recovered. Fear of going out ,to a public place is real. And,customers will avoid a place that lowered their cleanliness standards.
BN lost their previous rep for being a premier place to shop. Customers avoid substandard retail places.
No company ever says “we’re horrible. So, we’re going to fire people “ They always blame something else !
The virus will be their excuse to purge their failing stores.
The Corona Virus is going to really k–l off business and the company will be badly affected. Layoofs coming for sure NOT because of bad company but because of the virus.
“They looked DISGUSTING, then. Haven’t been in a BN to know if they actually clean them now.“
I too haven’t been in BN since they started not to care that the cafe or bathrooms were filthy. Don’t care if there’s a new owner. To not care about your customer’s health doesn’t deserve a second chance !
Hope the new owners have a cleaning service. Under the old owners they did away with professional cleaners, opting for part timers to clean the cafe & restrooms.
They looked DISGUSTING, then. Haven’t been in a BN to know if they actually clean them now.
Ran into my old DM , he comes up to me all, “so great to see you I wondered about you”
Told that lying two face to “F” off....
"Those wronged, will still have the last laugh."
No. The stores go on. The last laugh is not on them.
Those wronged, will still have the last laugh.
Nothing will happen.
By the way. This is dead.
Barnes & Noble survives.
The long gone executives made their decisions to lay ff a lot of people to save stock and lefft with great benefit packages. It's the past. New owners. New life.
Nothing. And the fact weeks go by without anyone responding to a post shows how little anyone cares.
Signed
Len.
