Thread regarding NetApp layoffs

The end

This is the end.

Products constantly being dropped because the sales force can't sell or even explain them.

No demand in the market for hardware based solutions which is still the largest portion of revenue.

Stock market no longer a friend. No more buybacks and a potential dividend cut on the horizon. Either one of these will send the stock into the teens.

Impossible to brand NetApp as a cloud company at this point given the small footprint.

Year over year comparisons when earnings are announced may the the worst ever.

Employees absent even before the government told them to stay home. NetApp was prepared for quarantine through laziness.

Layoffs, layoffs, layoffs, layoffs until only the patents are left.

Agreed. However, does anyone have concrete data on layoffs?

I don't agree with the last response. Aside from any crisis I am concerned with the companys future prospects. If you didn't feel the same way you wouldn't be reading this site. In the current state of our economy it doesnt make sense to avoid commentary you may not agree with. For some who have been at NetApp a long time there has been an every increasing mismanagement of the company and it manifests with job and customer losses.

If you are afraid of this reality don't visit this site. If you want to hide your head in the sand and ignore what's going on you put yourself at risk. Don't look at this quarters results because your future may depend on them.

Technical experts like to do technical things in a technical way. Once the technical expert has a technical preference for a technical solution, the technical expert only pitches that technical solution without overlooking the big picture. In that sense, ONTAP made the business and it's the technical solution that technical experts love. Read "How to castrate a Bull", some discussion between NAS and SAN, the same history repeats itself. Technical experts within today's NetApp hate new innovative technology like SolidFire, OCI, Bycast, Onara, etc, etc, etc, etc.... and most sales have no clue what to do in such cases other than following the technical experts. George and his Italian motor gang know this for years but unable to turn it around.

Overlays exist because then you need the manager of the overlays, so it's basically create the problem to make yourself fake indispensable. The real problem is lack of deep technology knowledge of presentable good English speaking to meet customer, understand and solution. That is not an SE or a BDM, it's a well paid technical expert.

If you simply increase the speaking to thinking ratio you don't really sell more, you just increased your salary budget.

High up, i.e. George, should know this, the person usually asking to increase BDMs is the manager trying to keep their job by wanting more people to manage. Not to increase revenue. Revenue comes from good products put into the right spots by solid technical people who meet the customer.

Overlays are sales side employees that get paid on participation not revenue. This includes sales engineers like solution architects who can achieve their total compensation by simply answering questions from the sales teams. It also includes groups that have no ownership of accounts but get paid if the accounts close business they cover. Things like Flexpod, StorageGrid and HCI are examples. As a matter of fact the Flexpod group gets paid even if a Flexpod is not sold as a single deliverable. It only requires that the customer have all the components required to create one.

Seriously, this post is so general and worthless. Newsflash: companies have to evolve or die. If you don’t understand cloud services and how they drive value, you should go work for Pure Storage.

For those not in sales, what is an overlay?

NetApp overlays are looking like they are being targeted. Underperforming HCI reps with < $12M in revenue are being evaluated. The Cloud BU is hiring a sales org of BDM's/Overlays and usually only one group exists at a time. So likely cuts in the other products focused teams. The cuts are last months of Q4 as the assumption is the deals in flight can be closed without overlays. Several products were cut (NDAS, NKS and others), so select teams are at risk around those products.
