LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Lafayette's Caterpillar plant on South Street is set to temporarily close, citing "customer demand" amid the coronavirus outbreak.
A company spokesperson released the following statement to News 18:
- "We are taking a variety of actions at our global facilities to align production with customer demand, including temporary facility shutdowns at our Lafayette, Ind. location."
- Questions regarding when the closure would take place and whether or not associates would be paid were not answered by the company.
- The Lafayette Caterpillar Large Engine Center employs more than 1,300 people. The company, based in Deerfield, IL, invested $77.3 million into the Lafayette plant between 2018-19.
- The announcement makes the second Tippecanoe County manufacturing plant to close its doors as the virus spreads. Subaru of Indiana Automotive shut down operations for a week beginning Monday.
