Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

It's not voluntary

Seniority doesn't matter, numbers don't matter, if they want you gone, you're going. Was told today that none of the level 1, 2, OR 3 managers were consulted about techs being affected. They were provided a list generated by ATT legal & some other unidentified group. Names noted with "D" are being affected. No explanation and no help from management or union. They may not lay you off today, but if they move you to a "video team" and you know those products will no longer be offered. The handwriting is on the wall. Please let me know if I am wrong, nothing would make me happier than being wrong.

Show up. Be there in the office. Don’t miss work. If WFH can be done from your house, it can be done from another location also.

If you have to work at ATT for 40 years, you didn’t invest your money right. LOL

If he worked for 40 years with T he's probably got $1.5 million in 401K plus a $500000 pension waiting. Sounds like a great investment.

This applies for management. If you’re a bargained-for employee it’s by seniority. Period. Anyone taking you otherwise is a liar or ignorant.

They just basically pick the bottom x% and send those names to HR for review. That was done months ago so what ever you have done in the last few months has no impact. You have either already been selected or you're

Yep this is it. Unless hr adds some race gender formula I would say the bottom performers are gone.

For managers with less than 10 years, their pay is low and they will never get a pension. That is who they will keep.

You can thank your union for that. What exactly would they consult level 1-3 management for? The union does not allow for merit or skills to be a factor, it’s purely based on seniority. They have to follow the rules in your contract. So again, thank the antiquated union for that.

If a company needs to shed SG&A expense, where's the biggest bang for the buck? It's not about seniority or performance or merit. How much do you cost the company, all-in comp + benefits?

Nevermind that tenured employees generally have more value to offer the company than newer hires.

Think like an executive whose compensation is dependent on the company's performance and shareholder value. HR is just the messenger.

Not trying to argue but it says in the d3 contract that surpluses will go by seniority. It also does say they can go by work group but it has to go by seniority from that point

I do not fit into any criteria that is customarily used. I am as middle of the road (age & salary) as you can get. It seems to be arbitrary. Out of the handful of techs affected, there are no common denominators. Some legacy techs, some have been ATT their whole career. Some who plan to quit, others want to continue to work. Zero discipline issues that I am aware of.

“I’ve been here for 55yrs and I can’t believe ATT wants to get rid of me”. Go be a greeter at Home Depot.

Like most large corporations, the layoff list is based on two criteria: Age & Salary. Imagine that .xls spreadsheet for your company or dept or team, sorted descending on salary. Possibly an algorithm is applied that takes into consideration salary + age. Where do you fit in?
