MM never really valued (or understood) Marketing - she thought all her sales were a result of the sales teams. Never sc-aped the surface to see that it was the flyers, catalogs and emails and promotions that were actually producing much of the mid market revenue, repeat buys, activity. So she ended up cutting things she didn’t understand.

So now all the stupid cuts she put in last year are now coming home to roost - poor sales, videos no one watches and now about to lose control of her merchandising and marketing depts. Such a shame - the SBA Canada marketing dept was a department that was great to deal with when we needed more sales, and was well led, very efficient and very effective. Now it’s a shell of itself.

Wont be the need for so many BDMs in SBA. I use to work for SBA as a BDM and all we did was hunt Staples Preferred business. If we didnt do that, we would need never hit our numbers. Cold calling 10 places might find you competitor to go after.. that's if you're lucky.

Yep. Expect major cuts in Merchandising.
There will likely cuts in Marketing, IT, maybe HR.
Sales should be safe this year.

Don’t be fooled that there is nothing to worry about - this beckons the end of the Merchandising, Marketing, and IT teams. They only need to keep pricing, outside and inside sales and some sales ops. The rest can be removed for even more cost savings. That’s what happens when you have poor leadership that can’t deliver results - they lose the right to lead and the whole business suffers.

Will SPO Canada be rolled into the new entity? Make sense to have all the Staples business units in Canada in one business...

What functions will be aligned? If you align a lot of functions, you don’t need to have a separate SBA exec team. MB and MB aren’t going anywhere soon as they want a package, and MM still wants to be a president, even though her performance in the role is pretty awful. Keep DC and BK and you could bump the rest.

They said both companies will align certain functions but they will still be independent companies. Nothing Is supposed to change but for customers. There’s nothing to worry about.

I expect there to be lots of cuts in HO jobs coming soon.
Sometime within the next year I expect a sales team reorg between both companies.
FC consolidations when leases expire or relocate/consolidate into larger warehouse.
I'm sure after COVID SBA HO will likely move to Staples Canada offices to save $ on lease. A lot of people will likely be permanently WFH to save on office space.

What did DB say in his message? I’m at SBA in sales...

Wow - that’s crazy. Staples Canada wanted to take over the SBA business for the last decade, so it’ll be interesting if they can do this. It does make sense though as you could get rid of most of the SBA exec team and some management and a whole list of other functions and save big. There would be less channel conflict too. But I think you would need a lot of the outside sales teams - I don’t see that changing.

Is this really happening? Or just speculation and another crazy idea?

What do you think?

It’s going to be interesting and will take time for big changes. Different systems will make it hard to align, and it will be interesting to see what happens with outside account managers and bdms at SBA. Will it just be inside sales going forward.
