Thread regarding Dish Network layoffs

I Saw This Coming 2 Years Ago

In the summer of 2018 I was at Sling TV in American Fork. The first tranche of a bonus plan tied to subscriber numbers had just been paid. I had zero confidence that the next milestone would be reached. That, plus the toxic culture at Dish/Sling led me to begin a job search. I landed a fantastic new position, got a substantial raise, absolutely fantastic health insurance benefits and great people to work with in a company where management actually walks the walk of caring about their people.

There's a great line in the movie iRobot where Will Smith (playing a detective) remarks to the robotic scientist (played by Bridget Moynahan) when the new robots began to go berserk. He said:

Somehow "I told you so" doesn't quite say it.

That's my observation to my former colleagues at Sling TV.

AT&T and Verizon already have 5G Dish can't compete in wireless against the big carriers who have already been around doing it for decades. Big mistake It's a losing proposition, should have stuck with satellite and ott

For over 35 years both ATT and Verizon have been investing BILLIONS of dollars each year to grow their wireless networks...and they’re still not done. Sprint and TMobile have been trying to catch up with ATT and Verizon for the last 25 years and they still have a LONG way to go. I don’t think many people have a full understanding of the time and capital investment required to build a competitive national network. Dish gets to greenfield a 5g network but it will cost them billions and possibly take decades. Bottom line... if they’re serious about wireless they’ll sell off other assets, especially if they’re in decline.

Yes, it was coming well prior to Covid. Ergen publicly stated (a bit paraphrasing here but not far off), that Dish is investing every nickel they ever made into wireless. Back then I thought, are you kidding me? So your bread and butter income, which no doubt is shrinking by the day will no longer get attention as in resources or new product development? Talk about a gamble, but who would expect anything else from a former black-jack player who hoards all his billions for his family and couldn't give a rat's patooty about his employees. Bye-bye Charlie. Fortunately for me, I did land a new job with a major Silicon Valley employer who even today with all the issues surrounding the virus has done nothin but support their employees and even offer $1000 payouts for essential WFH items. Good luck those of you pledging your careers to Dish - talk about the Titanic.

Demoted recently. Was given an option. Step down or step out with no severance. They claim “ restructuring due to COVID. I call BS. They just came into Christiansburg Virginia and fired 22 others. Again “restructuring” looking for an out. Anyone know of any good at home positions lol

there will be more layoffs coming, since covid-19 is not even in the 2nd wave yet that comes this fall
if you're still working at sling/dish, jump ship while you can before you are the next victim

its funny, I was talking to a recruiter and when I told them I work at DISH, their first reaction was "Why?". The toxic culture notorious in the industry

I agree...the writing was on the wall a while ago. Sling/Dish has been in a serious decline for a while now. Many employees are complacent and are willing to ride it out to the end. Well, the roller coaster brakes are now being applied. Layoffs under the guise of Covid-19 have started and will likely continue to roll.

I found a much better position at a company with actual benefits, bonus, and a history of caring for their employees rather than judging them by some c-appola personality traits (i.e., CPAW) that the ego of the founder seems to think are key to success. Really, Luck should be part of CPAW as his first rocket didn't blow up. That was just pure Luck.

Time to look people. Recruiters are going to stop asking why you're wanting to leave Dish and instead are going to start asking why you're still there.
