I was a cosmetics counter manager at Nordstrom. They informed me they would lay me off because of their decision to reduce their workforce due to Covid-19...they called be back and decided to offer me a position as a “seasonal employee” in fulfillment for Anniversary (I am the only counter manager hired back as seasonal that was put in another department) and I am still there currently. We were told that we may get an opportunity to return if positions became available after anniversary. They hired other seasonal employees back in the cosmetics dept as well. This is my issue, they offered another “seasonal” representative currently in the cosmetics dept my previous permanent counter manager position, even though I am still there as a temporary seasonal as well. How can this be legal?! Some other sales reps were placed in fulfillment were moved back into cosmetics as positions opened, I respectfully expressed my interest in returning to cosmetics to my department manager to see if it was possible and she said she was waiting to see what positions would become available. I was under the impression my position was completely eliminated, which In turn made me understand the decision to lay me off. I was in good standing... I was also always praised for my performance. They even promoted regular reps to be counter managers in other counters. They haven’t even discussed anything with me. I am shocked.

same thing happened to me but even worse. I was a counter manager also and got furloughed. after 5 months of furlough, my manager called me and told me I was being let go due to covid but the strange part is she asked me to log on workday to submit resignation. she told me hr told her to tell everyone to do that. Of course I didnt do that and called hr myself. they said we wouldn't tell managers to do that and to inform her to not anyone tell anyone to submit resignation. I'm like hmmmm. I called my manager up again and she played dumb. I think she was lying to mess up my unemployment. Plus I called one of my other coworkers that also got laid off to ask if she was told the same thing(submit resignation) and she said no she wasn't told that. another hmmm. I also called another coworker who started the same time as me and he said he got called back to manage 5 cosmetic counters. I asked him if they were offering him more money for the added responsibilities and he said no. well anyways, I get called back to get offered seasonal in fulfillment for anniversary with a significant pay cut and they would call me with a schedule for the start date 7/27-9/03. Well guess what, to this day I haven't heard back from Nordstrom. They're grimey, I wouldn't recommend working at Nordstrom not even to my worst enemy. Thank God I found a better job.
Went back to work to pay them back**
Yes I agree ... I have a theory they only brought back people who had medical insurance with them as seasonal so we would have to pay them back ... they charged everyone who came back seasonally, back payments of medical totaling in over $400. I had two weeks where I only worked 1 day and they deducted everything. So essentially I went to work for to pay them back my medical insurance 🙄
they are complete a–holes with zero regard for anyone. 18 year old snotty b–ch managers, etc, that company can fold anytime and i will gladly celebrate.
Is it legal? yes, you're not in a union, they can hire/fire whoever they want. Is it fair to you? absolutely not. My experience with Nordstrom is management always has favorites. Other than complain to HR who may or may not help you, there's nothing much you can do.
You’re right it is completely senseless. It’s just so strange... I agree maybe somehow it is personal but I’ve never had any disagreements with management, I’m a pretty low-key / mellow type of person which is rare for the cosmetics department lol. This whole situation is just stressful for everyone they aren’t communicating with us at all. It’s just odd as well because they never transferred me over to fulfillment fully. I am currently still active counter manager for that particular line in the system with the same pay.
Sorry to hear about your experience. To everyone - don't expect any HR decisions to make sense. They are experts at pulling the rug from under you "legally"
