Thread regarding Nordstrom layoffs

Ultimatum to work low pay $12.50 temporary fulfillment job or quit Counter Manager $20 plus commissions and counter override position...

About 10 counter managers in our store including myself were called and told that there was no hours available to bring us back into our previous positions despite being told back in March we would all be coming back. In one quick unexpected call you either had to accept a 35% hourly pay cut or be termed leaving you to deal with a work refusal with unemployment. If hours are still unavailable after Anniversary Sale then your employment is over and you no longer an employee at all but since it’s coded as a seasonal unemployment doesn’t cover seasonal jobs. You are fu##ed either way! Who else has this been happening too? What are you doing about it? Have you noticed a pattern of who they are not calling back in? Honestly this reeks...

Update as a manager that transferred to fulfillment : they told me that they are hiring at the rack for $15 in fulfillment by my location ...if I was interested in applying I would most likely get hired. I said no, the permanent pay cut is not suitable, she actually agreed with me. Sent her a text to get it in writing to confirm they will not consider it a refusal and she confirmed. If they tell you, that you can apply to a position for lower pay after the seasonal position is over you can decline and continue to collect unemployment.

Depending on your state, I recommend that you do not resign if you want unemployment. In order to collect unemployment you MUST be separated by no fault of your own. In California if you are offered a position you MUST take it in order to continue to be eligible. You can collect partial unemployment for a pay decrease. Try and find some where else to be employed while you collect. Nordstrom is a sinking ship ...even people who were not laid off are not safe.

I'm a counter Manager I worked in fulfillment for ten days, for 13.00 I'm supposed to go back to Anniversary for six weeks if there aren't hours I'll be let go unless I take a 10. Dollar payout. However for the 10 days I worked in fulfillment they paid me at my cosmetics wage which I have to pay pay back along with the arrears which they made it sound like a gift that they were taking care of our health care benefits. So I owe money I not making money to save after Anniversary incase I lose my position. I making money for 5 weeks to pay them back till they lay me off, force me back to fulfillment. I love this company I'm so broken up about it and my Direct Manager who screwed my wage from cosmetics to fulfillment is to busy to talk to me. Shes angry at me. And the people the bought back first are top notch 5 of them but I strongly believe I was one of the 10 strong counter managers that should have been on. I'm not sure if i should resign ou r try to get fired.

my job told me they wanted to lower me from $25 to $15 an hour or they would report work refusel. I had lawyer write a demand letter to them claiming descrimination and a hostile work environment (cost me $150) and they got scared and offered me unemployment.

You don’t really need the notice of reduced wages according to the Edd rep due to COVID-19 ...but it can help the process go faster at times. It is a letter Nordstrom provides Edd that informs them you are receiving reduced wages from what you were previously receiving. If you google It. It should pop up ..just so you know what to look for. Ask HR to provide one for you and they’ll open a case, after you receive your offer letter they will produce one for you. I requested one ...it can’t hurt and it’s good for yourself to have that documentation.

I’m reading all the responses and it’s such a shame because everyone was probably told they would all be brought back in like we were told back in March. To pull the rug out from under us at the last minute is disgraceful. They should of given us proper notice our jobs were gone instead of that quick call. Somebody mentioned a notice of reduced wages letter. Can you describe? I think I need this but haven’t heard of this or know where to ask for it. Thank you and stay strong beauties!

@christina -you must be laid off due to no fault of your own. So if you are separated from the company due to the negative impact of COVID -19 you are fine. It depends what Nordstrom puts on your letter of separation and what they report. You can’t be fired because of anything you did such as being late, not showing up etc. If they offer you another position , whatever it is ... you HAVE to take it in order to remain eligible.

I got a hold of unemployment office in California by some miracle. She explained to me , if you want to decline the position it really depends on what Nordstrom reports. If they report to Edd that you decline any position, you can not collect Edd from that point. If they allow your lay-off to process without reporting the refusal, you would be able to collect. You report the income on reported wages on your existing Edd claim. You can still collect even if it’s seasonal and collect any difference (if there is one) from the amount you would normally receive from Edd. If any amount is collected it would count against the weeks you have remaining on you Edd claim. Trust me, when I say they are praying we refuse this employment so they no longer have to pay us for unemployment. This company is trash

I called HR and they didn’t know a thing. The thing is in order to still qualify it has to be deemed “unsuitable employment” by EDD that can gets really tricky. There is no specific guidelines, it’s up to EDDs determination. From my understanding to be sure it’s considered “unsuitable” you MUST contact Edd. Right now you can’t even get through By phone ...it’s very difficult, so your best option is to email the situation through your existing claim. The safest thing we can do is return back. I’ve been trying to research it on my own and from what I gathered, you can turn it down after you already started if it in fact determined to be unsuitable. If they say it’s suitable employment you must go back during that “seasons” duration which In my case 1 month, during that time From what I read I will receive partial unemployment for the difference and continue to collect Full unemployment from the point the employment ends in California. Depending on your state since it is a seasonal position it is also a tricky, in California seasonal still qualifies. You must try and get a hold of your states EDD in any way you can to ask these questions. I’m awaiting my email from EDD but until then I can’t take that risk. I have to to support myself any way I can.

You can receive your unemployment then appeal later- just bc you are offered a wage half your pay that you did not apply for it makes practical sense ot to accept bc you have other higher paying jobs in process. I dont think you have to accept a wage that does not cover your first financial obligation Rent or your Health Insurance premuim.

Me to! The temporary hours offered to Counter Managers equal about $337 = 25 hours at 13.50 hour, but hours can be cut at anytime. They have signs and masks available but customers can choose to shop NOT wearing a mask, hmm im diabetic and have bouts of Lupus. Do i risk for a temporary position that does not cover rent, let alone health insurance, utilities, gas to get to work, food...

These stories are unfortunate, and painful for those of you living them, but be grateful that Nordstrom has given you any chance of a job at all.

We are witnessing the accelerated Death of Retail. The execs in #803 have no idea if your store will even be open a year from now.

“Staying in retail” may mean working in an Amazon fulfillment center. If this sounds dreadful, then accept your fate in the short-term and do your best.

Nordstrom can no longer afford the old gentility and “nice” from years past. Hardly a consolation, but understand the austere reality here.

Just happened to me too same exact thing I was a counter manager now I have to work fulfillment with a huge pay cut. But I’m praying we can atleast get partial unemployment to make up for the difference. I’m calling HR before I have to go in tomorrow to see if I can get a notice of reduced earnings form. To have to go back for minimum wage 😒 , its crazy
