Why is eCommerce Failing?

Why is ecommerce such an abysmal failure? Is it assortment, leaders, or both?

I mean, any gains are from panic buyers (sanitizer, wipes). Not actual talent or strategy IMO. How many ways can you sell paper and ink? Staples was #2, now it's not even in the top 20.

And when you take away the contract sales from .com, not even in the top 100.

How horrible does it have to get before the get rid of ineffective people at the mid to top levels.

Look at our colleagues in ecom. Do they look like the are doing anything other than updating pictures?

Tech Vendor comment: when we release a new product we email staples info repeatedly and badger buyers to set up product. Sometimes they do and sometimes not... regardless it takes months of pursuit. Contrast to amaz. We set up all new releases on site ourselves with a plus content and write opening orders... amaz always has product on release. Staples usually doesn’t. Frustrating.

Why does anyone care about RQD. I had a mtg with her recently and was not impressed. I understand the prior bully and self promoting description written previously, seems appropriate.

Mid level and salespeople that actually work are two of the reasons this company can grow. Continue to clean out corporate roles and leadership that don’t. Toxic people should go and there is no place for bullies or personal agendas.

Do you think Sycamore realizes the lemon they bought by now (in terms of both SDS and eComm)? Are they going to do something about it, besides lay off grunts (some, even many, are bad, yes, but they do actual work)? Couldn't they invest in a couple of heavy hitters, clean out upper management, and try to rebuild this thing right? They just took out a 5B loan last year, right? Where's the money gone?

They do sell ads and have sponsored product placements. They 3rd party the ads and manually create deals for placement. Both are suboptimal. As is eCom leadership. All of them!

Anyone see the same but advertised as new menu on the website? ROFL. Its the same fn thing! Only repainted and shifted over. Garbage!

I don't understand why Staples doesn't sell advertising on the site like every top eCommerce site. Seems like a pretty big miss by leadership, though not at all surprising.

Horrible new design of the website. Who did this how much did they pay them and who actually thought this was good and approved it?
Still too many layers of people which hinders margins making products and the company not as competitive as it should be. Focus on a better website where customers can find products and get real information. You could cut another 500 mid level do nothings and then lower prices.

They should promote MC and tell AVE to get lost. AVE is possibly the worst leader I’ve seen at Staples, why do they need her to tell Ecom to push ink & paper every week, is that really what they’re paying her for?

Staples wants to be a player in ecomm but doesn’t want to invest in what’s required to succeed. The issue is the top - SD, JH and MM have no idea how to run a digital business. Or a sales-led business, or a product-led business, when I think about it! How many more misses are required before they’ll be changed too? Or maybe they’ll be asked to run down the business instead?

What you don’t like the idea of another voice of the customer survey? Company continues to invest in .com and do nothing to bring the contract site along with it. Divide and conquer within our own businesses, which has never made sense. But let’s do another survey and another slide show with what customers are saying. Hasn’t changed people. We have heard the same feedback every time. Time for a change and action.
