Thread regarding Tesla, Inc layoffs

Tesla is actively slicing and dicing now - August 2020

Tesla is actively reducing their head count - August 2020. No department is safe, no group is safe including senior citizens, the disabled or long term workers (more than 1 year). No one is laid off - everyone is fired and it usually is for " poor performance" or what they also call "under performers" unless you are the inexperienced or uneducated or both managers.

I was let go too. Similar story.

No PIP.
Lead turned manager.
RSU going backing to the pool.

Wonder if there is any legal recourse if all the 'let go' people band together.

if someone telling here that this is performance layoff, that person let go off his people, and trying to justify. i was part of layoff last week, i worked almost 4 years in that company and always passionate about the mission of Tesla but when i let go on the basis of performance, i was surprised. I was never put on PIP, it's a CA law that your have to put person on PIP and then you let go for performance issues. I know another 5 colleagues who let go off for same reason. I had trust in the company and i worked sincerely there, but there is so much politics on higher management and sometime you are end up as scapegoat. Tesla is letting 4 plus years employees go because we own stocks, all of our RSUs go back to company, and right now stock is $1600, so it makes perfect sense for them to have those back to company pool. Just in case you are wondering, I was laid off by a manager, who just got hired because his friend is at management level. So BYOFriend and let's play Politics, so we can get more and more people under us. Indian mentality.

Samyaza, you get a severance only after you sign away your rights to challenge the termination and promise not disparage the company.

Funny, some of the managers should be the ones let go. Tesla has the most inexperienced and incompetent management. They have absolutely no idea how to run a car manufacturing assembly line. And the First Pass Yield and the amount of NC (defects) each vehicle has during production is absolutely laughable. Clown show indeed.

I’m a manager at Tesla. There is no requirement to let people go, it is purely performance / attitude based on the recent performance review period which is for q1 2020. It isn’t a lay off as we’re actively hiring. If you have a bad attitude or underperform you’re out.

I was also given the old “performance “ excuse for termination this week after 6 years. I was not put on a performance plan or given warning that certain performance would lead to termination. I was somewhat vocal about the lack of safety protocols put in place to follow the guidelines for Covid transmission prevention. I think they were told to terminate “said” numbers of individuals, and they picked the ones they couldn’t easily control or fit with the Tesla plan of do what everything you can to get numbers/orders.

"So you stay quiet is my guess - did they make you sign a termination agreement?"

Yes, I stay quiet and yes there is a termination agreement for waiver of claim. Must be done before any severance pay can be collected. This is a layoff, despite what others may say. Also, HR will not go into any specifics on why you were terminated. All text is generic.

I just googled, there is no layoff news at Tesla. so this is fake news.

People saying this is performance related are lying. This is a lay-off.

If Tesla is citing performance, are you ineligible for unemployment?

I can confirm the layoffs are true. If you work at Tesla, you know this is not the “usual review”. I know of at least five people who have been let go of personally. That doesn’t happen on “review” periods. Especially since Tesla has never had review periods on time or in a consistent manner. They’re done either twice a year on a 1H & 2H basis. Or some departments only one review period per year.

there isn't a layoff. this is review period where under performers are being asked to leave. Each conversation should have followed roughly the same exit script starting with a short paragraph about performance shortfalls.

don't be anxious or nervous going to work tomorrow, expect face-saving chatter after terminations because they are in shock and its hard to own, and embarrassing to admit being let go.

Sorry to see folks go, there's no layoffs though. the overall headcount is being increased everywhere.
this was purely performance related.

I do not have an exact number, but two technicians at a local service center and two members of my team were let go. I cannot go into further detail without jeopardizing and severance pay I might receive, but I do know that there are many more.

sorry to hear that...if you dont mind me asking, do you know how many ppl were laid off ?

Dont worry. If you have worked hard and stayed true to your conscience, you will succeed somewhere else for sure

I was an unfortunate victim of this latest wave of layoffs. Many years of blood sweat and tears I put into this company, just to feel betrayed. I was told it was my performance and that "The difficult decision has been made to terminate your employment with Tesla." But if I was fired, why do we all get severance packages???
