Thread regarding Western Digital Corp. layoffs

Company feels like it’s blowing up

Two key leaders at WD are leaving. Message from CEO was a joke. Hack job couldn’t even say anything about them and what they did for WD. Misspelled last name of one of the leaders. Total joke. People are bailing and word is Goeckeler is bringing in more of his inside Cisco people. Goeckeler has done nothing but bring havoc to WD since he joined. No changes other that cutting people who he clearly doesn’t care about. He has money for his office areas and remodeling but not to save people and programs. We are working around the clock and instead of the bonuses we deserve he gives us 15% less than he should have. The board is crickets! Do they even care? WD board of directors who vetted this guy and are you trying to break up the company?

I've been an engineer at WDs main competitor for a few decades now and saddened to read about the current WD leadership. Even though I am on the other side, I always had respect for the former executives running WD going back to the mid 90s. My thoughts are with those pounding dirt day after day (and I hope you feel likewise for those working in the fields on my side.)

@bwii+16vRz3K7 you are lucky. Have you seen the debt, the required CapEx for Kioxia this year and CapEx needed for basic business? Blame the CEO all you like, he was left with an almost impossible position.

Those who still don't know what the 'vision' is, it's clear the transitions (flash and hdd) have to on/better than plan. If successful, then a vision for the future is relevant. Right now the vision is to have a future.

Got to love a CEO who tells his employees they are “lucky” to get their bonuses. Seriously? How out of touch with employees is Goeckeler? Oh wait, he doesn’t give a c-ap about us. I am not holding my breath for any future bonuses.

Hoping to see Goeckeler talking about us and the future. We have so much good happening and need the market and analysts to have confidence and faith in us.

How about our CEO starts talking to the market? Maybe starts to share vision and generate excitement and his belief and why for the company.

Goeckeler knew what he was signing up for (minus Covid), time he starts talking and stops being silent or being clearly unprepared.

Board should not have allowed a Sandisk takeover when the HGST takeover itself was not finished. Allow for one takeover after showing the results in financials from the previous takeover.

WD is clearly in danger. Agree there is a need for tough choices to course correct.

Goeckeler has been with us since March and has yet clear to form any new strategy or focus other than replay past strategy and tell us to work harder to make it happen faster? We have had 3 employee meetings and it’s basically the same depth of substance (lack). At least this last one we had other leaders who could walk the talk.

CEO’s are supposed to care about the talent, the people. Not to hold their hand but to provide leadership, unity and focus. Be a voice outside the company. Goeckeler cares more about spending money on his CEO brand than aligning with his leaders. His little lapel pin on Facebook and lack of any presence in the market or business news tells you he doesn’t have the ability just the ego.

WD needs a leader not a Cisco leftover who was pushed out along with his motley crew. We need someone who cares about our company and it’s future direction and care about the company, the livelihoods of thousands of employees who are counting on this CEO to actually provide leadership and focus.

This guy...not so much. All you have to do is listen to the earnings call. Incapable of responding To questions about our market and clearly not prepared. I really wanted to believe we had a chance and wanted Goeckeler to succeed. It’s not going to happen.

"Goeckeler said nothing." and "Goeckeler said nothing that told me he gets it.". One is true, which one? Rhetorical question.

Since when are CEO suppose to care about employees? The previous CEO cared about employees? Yes, he gave more lip service ("We."), but if you actually look around, you'll notice less people. Have you not notice the continuous exodus? Again, CEO job is not to care about employees (whatever that means). He is no worse than the previous psychopaths, at least he realizes that WD is in mortal danger instead of the previous 'whistling past the graveyard' approach.

"Our head of HR is clearly a Puppet." You do know the purpose of HR is to make sure the company doesn't get sued, right? They are not there for employees. Who do you think signs their paycheck? Properly run HR has one purpose and it's not employees. Too naive.

I expect most of the belly aching here are people who bought into the last regime and now they feel threatened their positions are at risk. Yeah, if you don't contribute to the bottom line directly, you are at risk. Again, a CEO cares about keeping the doors open. If your position isn't helping that, yeah, you're at risk. Sorry, but this pain was expected after years of mismanagement ("thought leader" nonsense). Gonna have to deal with it.

Company meeting today was a joke. Goeckeler said nothing. Thank God for Bob Eulau and Siva Sivaram. Our head of HR is clearly a Puppet. Goeckeler said nothing that told me he gets it. I guess no software business line of reoccurring revenue in his future. Goeckeler is our COVID.

Anyone who thinks David Goeckeler cares about the employees is clearly not listening, reading or watching. He doesn’t want to share the limelight. He is making this all about him. Today’s company meeting made it clear. He is following the playbook of before and only out for himself. Why would $$ be spent on his personal brand at ten company? His personal geeky wannabe logo on Facebook, his remodel of a executive kitchen and mistreatment of our support staff across the company along with his “Team DG” people who believe they can treat our people, executives and programs like c-ap? How did we not know this? Who didn’t vet him and his team? How many more employees have to lose their jobs? He has people on his team who clearly care only about their little clique and have NO CLUE about the people of WD. It’s sad because at the end of this we will all be losing our jobs with our stock in the toilet.

For fun watch the amateur videos of him on YouTube. Whoever thinks that is “cool” is clearly out of touch.

"It’s clear our jobs are now to just listen, sit down and say nothing."

how quaint, "now". Before it was, "drink kool-aid or leave". You prefer that?

btw, CEOs aren't born as CEOs. former one was an accountant. apparently not a very good one at that.

Yes, we have issues to fix in the business. That is why our former CEO is out.

A CEO has to have a voice and vision. He has to care about the customers, partners and the people on the team. No delusions here. Goeckeler is ill equipped with no CEO experience to understand what we need. He should stick to running a business unit and we need a leader to bring us together not tear the company apart. It’s clear our jobs are now to just listen, sit down and say nothing.

I disagree. The seeds of WD's problems can be traced back to at least the failure of the Toshiba deal. This made it essentially impossible for WD to get rid of the debt it acquired when it bought SanDisk (why can't WD compete in mobile?). The merger of HGST/WD was based on nothing other than "which team is largest? we'll keep them" and of course +1B USD loss pursuing MAMR (and not pursuing HAMR). Now both are irrelevant.

New CEO has a lot of mess to clean up. Is he up to the task? Time will tell. Don't blame him for trying to fix what years of bad decisions caused. You should be thankful to him for popping your delusional bubble. Do you now see why the Board is quiet?

It's absolutely true. David is out for himself which would be ok if he wasn't incompetent. The sycophants he brought with him from Cisco are laughably worthless. More on the way. Time for the Board to train its new puppy not to s*** on the carpet before it's too late.
