Anyone here have any tips for negotiating severance at Cengage? I’ve read articles online about it. I’d like to know what successes people have had negotiating severance agreements at Cengage.

IIRC the going rate is a month of severance for every year then when it runs out you can collect unemployment, so they’re pretty fair.
I don’t know how one would negotiate severance,
HR - you’re being let go. We will give you a month of severance for every year of service
Employee - that won’t work for me. I want 3 months for every year
HR - How about we compromise and pay you two months for every year?
Employee - I accept and agree to be fired today
I actually will not rip them on their severance packages. I received almost a year's pay and help finding something else. They don’t have to pay you at all so whatever is given, take it.
There are two times to negotiate severance:
- When you are hired.
- If you can prove to be a significant benefit for keeping you on for 30-90 days to help with transition. You’ll stay for xx days if they give you xxx. Quid pro quo.
Remind them that Cengage is a mission-based company and that the mission is not to make as much money as possible. Therefore, they should give you more severance money.
Try telling them you’re actually your own CEO. Name your price and shame them through the ethos into giving you what you want. HR needs to break down their silos. Maybe try the old two in a box trick.
Cengage should make a MindTap on this topic and post it on Inside.
Honestly, you have no leverage. Just be happy to get it. Sorry for the job loss.
Employees have no leverage during these times.
1 year ago the employees dictated the job market, now companies can do whatever they want with desperate "slaves".
Oh how powerful a force the invisible virus is... more effective than guns or nuclear bombs.
If you are lucky enough to get it, take what you can get. There's not much to negotiate.
