Thread regarding layoffs

Corporate culture

Interviewing for a corporate role but trying to get a handle on the culture. Would love to be in an upbeat growth company. Is that Amazon? My recent Tech experience is daily knife fights among team members when the company was making billions anyway. People getting laid off or put on performance plans. Just looking for something more positive. Thoughts?

Knife fights can be a good thing. Not saying active aggression is a good thing but, at the office, it’s all about meeting people to hash things out to get things done. At AWS, it’s passive aggression through narrrative writing. Any aggression you may have is not self-directed on you and your ability to write. Not sure which method is better, I think a combination of both but the AWS approach to the “combined” style is just awkward.

Also, I don’t think there are daily battles per se but it’s more trying to help as many people as you can while getting your stuff done. It’s a good battle for the most part.

Your recent experience of knife fights and layoffs and performance plans will stand up well in Amazon, except that the knives will be in your back from your Manager to maintain his PIP quota.
