Thread regarding American Express Co. layoffs

Tech layoffs have started at axp

16+ years... had one of my best years in 2021 and was let go.... you get exposed to a lot of new stuff and new ideas, but Amex is not known for retaining talent as they don’t want to pay people what they are worth..... I have to agree with the sentiment that Amex just doesn’t care at the leadership level.

I went through management training with some guy who liked to talk about his golf game. One of his lectures was about how as a manager you had to make sure that the domain experts didn't take control. I'm a software engineer. American Express is the kind of company that, if a software engineer does something great, her manager will get an award. AMEX will always see the business people as the stars of the company, and the people in financial technology as being lower in the pecking order. My technology-ignorant management got paid to tell me to work harder, and completely ignored any attempt I made to fix problems before they occurred. I quit, and cancelled my AMEX card.

Amex is not the company they portray themselves to be. Employees must write their own annual reviews, and managers don’t even look at the reviews when they decide the ratings based on a bell curve. Favorites always get the best reviews. I know this because I was a manager at American Express for over 30 years.

I left voluntarily earlier this month and I’m glad I did after many years there. Bonus is terrible this year and no merit increase so many are trying to leave or get a severance package if displaced. Leadership doesn’t care. It’s business as usual and lots of layoffs are still happening. Will be org changes for another month.
