Who is really safe here? Answer - no one. I’ve seen so many colleagues whose experience and knowledge that were invaluable to the company are now gone. Over the years I’ve seen our best and worst discarded like yesterday’s news. I’m at the point where I feel like I’m walking on eggshells, worrying when the next cut will occur and praying I find something else before then. This is the first company I’ve worked for where I feel I am in constant need of keeping my guard up.

IPS, "Netflix for Textbooks" is an incredibly compelling analogy. However, I wonder if this type of model could save the student money? That seems like the type of business model that would be greatly appealing to investors and in line with the ethos of a socially responsible company.
I would say to ISP is that Cengage has been behind in Edtech for the past 20 years. Never has been the leader or innovator.
The poster named IPS is a master of satire although some are taking their posts literally. The name IPS alone gives it away even before the regurgitated corporate platitudes.
‘Similar to Netflix?’ Nah. Cengage is subscription, sure, but so are a lot of things: software applications, magazines, music, dieting meal plans, charities: any company trying to lock in a steady income stream while reducing marketing costs. But Cengage is still an educational publisher, designing and preparing educational content and executing ‘print’ whether it’s to web or paper.
That is all fine and good but I would like to remind everyone Cengage is not an educational publisher.
Cengage has defined the EdTech space and continues to experience massive success with Cengage Unlimited, which consistently gains market share. Our “competitors” have not even come up with a game plan to enter the EdTech Space while we continue to disrupt while creating a new industry.
The best analogy I can give you would be that Cengage is similar to Netflix, but for textbooks.
A lot of other industries are deadly boring: so much so you’ll wish they had more layoffs (think insurance, financial services.) And medical industries have a lot of egotistical doctors who are patronizing (at best) to lower level staff. I found the educational publishing companies more interesting and fun.
I remember feeling this year after year. The moment you realize your team has officially passed from being blessed by senior leadership as the latest and greatest to suddenly becoming cursed. It was usually due to a new senior leader who couldn't wait to bring his own team in from outside to compete with yours. Pretty soon no one wants to hear your ideas and you stop getting invited to important meetings. Out in the cold. Then it was time to start quietly scouting a new team, start looking outside the company or start throwing people under the bus to save your own hide in advance of the next yearly purge. Great times. I'm blessed to have such great memories of my time at Cengage.
It's the same with all the big publishing companies. Cengage is no better or worse.
You don’t need to walk on eggshells. You need to become a disrupter. When you face a problem engage and face it full on. Speak up! Be your own CEO and engage others to transform a problem into a solution! Roles do not matter, teamwork does!
Embrace change! We only need the best and brightest. If you’re not a passionate disrupter you will no doubt be left behind by Cengage.
There are plenty of jobs out there where you will be compensated more, and respected...and happy.. with work/life balance. If you're complaining and that scared, why stay?
