Thread regarding Kroger Co. layoffs

They would rather close than pay the workers a little more - that’s Kroger

Long Beach City Council: “Hey Kroger, you need to give your grocery workers a couple of extra bucks”

Kroger: “No way, we’d rather close stores and lay off workers”

https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2021-02-01/kroger-closes-two-long-beach-grocery-stores-hazard-pay-ordinance - this really is a disaster, but it doesn’t surprise me.
I used to work here once and I remember it as one of the worst experiences.

Interesting that when the minimum wage increases. They don't close stores. In Arizona the minimum wage went up to $12 an hour. To pay for it. They raised prices to pay for it.
Proves rodney cares more about politics then employees, customers or market share.

Why are they only closing two stores out of 8 if they don’t want to pay the hazard pay?

@xsh+19dhF24U Kroger is the worst. They are firing everyone who works online. If you work tech - get out now. Do not believe a word corporate says - they are lying to tie you in until they can fire you without warning. Or, better yet, they'll have you reapply for your position just to tell you that you weren't QUALIFIED for it anymore!
Rodney and the Europeans have moved in and they are s—ing kroger dry. Get out now while you can, and if you are a woman - once you reach 45 - it's GOOD-BYE! (Unless you sleep with Yael and that like some of the corporate cronnies)

Get to work and quit whining. Get yourself a trade school degree and become a medical industry worker etc. You reap what YOU sow.

I agree Kroger is an evil company but in this case the local government was totally out of line. Why is it that only certain companies have to pay to $4 an hour. If it was applied to every business that was open to public then I could agree with what they were trying to do. from what I've seen this is the first of many of these situations that's going to roll out so I guess Kroger was taking a hard line on it to send a message to people

This is the cao play book...
Wages as low as they can make them.
Cut labor even if it affects the customer.
Roll the profits or borrow money to re purchase stock. Even have a catch frase for that. To artificially prop up the price of the stock.
Don't have to worry about a business plan or company debt.
Get the biggest bonus and stock options possible. Then cash out and retire.

“Is a job better than no job”? “Of course it is” . Exactly - it is and THATS the issue for those about to lose their job and benefits because of corrupt politicians pandering and vote buying. Nothing “false” framing about that at all. And I never said Kroger’s leadership wasn’t corrupt, but you have no idea if they can afford that hike or not without raising prices on consumers which may cost them customers to pay for that hike. And if they cave it won’t just be pay hikes at two stores..

Love the false framing from first response. “Is a job better than no job.” Of course it is.

The issue is whether grocery workers working at risk deserve a tad bit more pay from a corporation that made over $2 billion in profits last year.

Kroger is an evil company, run by evil people. Anyone who has worked there knows this. They literally let Oath Keepers gather money from their rewards program in Indiana. It’s a pro-sedition company that treats people very badly.

I’m guessing if you ask the employees they would probably say having their current paycheck and benefits is better than zero paycheck and benefits.. These political thugs that use businesses to amass votes for themselves just put a lot of ppl out of work. And it’s not “a little” more money - do the math. Kroger knows if they capitulated it will be a domino effect and corrupt politicians will do this will all their stores. Do the math on that.. I’m not a Kroger ceo fan either. He is also corrupt..
