I’m an AE and feel like I’m on the chopping block. My check went in last night (my bank releases when they get it not when it’s dated) and it’s way more than it should be. We don’t have any incentive or bonus payouts this week to my knowledge. And I can’t view my check in Workday. Has anyone that has been laid off share their experience? My territory is underperforming and if anyone in my district is gonna go it’ll probably be me.

If you work for Cengage you probably will be laid off at some point.
Does anyone know what Pearsons' big announcement will be March 5th? Not sure how it will impact Cengage (list sales, etc.) but has anyone heard?
In my experience layoffs seem to happen on Thursday. The standard email meeting request from a manager having to share an update with you is how it’s done. Usually the HR rep is added at the last minute.
If you still work here you should assume you will be laid off and prepare accordingly.
This is repayment for last year's salary cut.
Layoffs have never been announced on a Friday. They need to get through notifications and then follow-up with wider teams, including the day after with time for questions and checking-in with people.
@vby+19mhTvEg. It will be office closures and sales headcount. There is nowhere else to cut.
could it be the backpay from the pay cut from last year?
@jke+19mhTvEg I didn't listen to the call but saw the slides. Its very interesting that they have stopped painting the significant revenue declines as negative and are instead focusing on profitability via cost savings. There's only one way that can be achieved, and that's more and more cuts. I think more office closures are coming as a rapidly shrinking company can't support as many locations.
Well if you listened to the investor call this morning, everything is coming up roses, despite being down almost $80MM for the year. At this point, their only choice and obvious course of action is to cut their way to the bottom, which is exactly what they are doing.
Cengage is so toxic that employees see layoffs around every corner. It's been like that for more than 10 years.
Is this the type of place you want to spend the rest of your career?
Do you have any scheduled meetings with your mgr? If you see hr added or as a last minute addition you’re getting laid off.
Trust your gut. If you think you are getting let go, then you probably are. It is impossible to know the timing. If your manager is worth a darn, they will give you a heads up that wheels are in motion, so that you can start looking ASAP. Typically people don't get let go this time of year unless it is mass layoffs. But Cengage is such a mess, its hard to tell.
If you do, consider yourself lucky and move on with your life. There are plenty of good jobs out there in companies that are actually growing.
