Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Ever Wonder Who Really Posts Here

I believe there are at least 5 groups of people who post here.

First, internet trolls who post on dozens of sites like this just to breed discontent and spread lies because they have no other life. Just like to push people's buttons and often fake discussions with themselves by posting opposing views. This is where you see the same terms used over and over in posts over several months, including where most of the most profane and attack oriented posts originate. Sick people that laugh and delight when people take their bait.

Second, people who don't work for EM, but strongly oppose the company based on their policies on issues such as renewables, etc. Again, mostly negative posts, accuracy questionable. Just want to hurt EM on each and every topic.

Third, current and former employees with legitimate opinions about working at EM, both positive and negative. Strong feelings, and may have vastly different experiences. These usually make reasonable statements with some logic behind what is said.

Fourth, non-employees with a casual interest in EM who only occasionally weigh in on a topic of interest. Usually not terribly positive or negative, just observations.

Finally, current employees who think they can avoid being laid off themselves by talking others into leaving with claims of how EM is an awful place and lots of other companies are so much better. The more that leave, the more secure they feel. I know this is happening, but I can't see how it would really be effective.

I think the majority of posts come from the first 2 groups, with fewer from actual employees, although many from employees likely have legitimate complaints. I am not taking a position on whether working at EM is good or bad, just my observations. It's just difficult for me to believe that professionally educated employees would stoop to such low levels to continuously attack others with such hatred, despite their disappointment in the company's actions. Thoughts?

This site let us hear about the 8% last year way ahead of time because someone leaked the guidelines circulated to management. Then, in July it was leaked on here that there would be a mass layoff in December. Both were absolutely spot on. I keep coming back and checking to see if anything else has been leaked. I believe this site has pushed management to sharing more info ahead of time instead of being secretive.

Don’t ever underestimate what people with stoop to. I think you’d be surprised who posts on here. I bet it’s a much higher percentage of current / former employees than you think. Just my opinion. - former employee PIP’d, passed, then let go on involuntary.

There are also those like me, got PIPed last year, who come to see the people who still work at EM whine and complain. Why? Because after the cuts last year those who were left had this sense of superiority. They didnt get cut last year so they felt smart and special. Now their turn is coming and I enjoy reading about how disappointed and over worked they are. You arent all that special after all it looks like.

Excellent post! You would be at +50 but the trolls are voting you down.

Very good analysis.
Board has devolved since 3Q or so last year for 'Layoff' relevance.
I'm a rare visitor now, but occasionally some fine posts.
Like this one.

I am a former employee. There was no exit interview, so I couldn’t tell them what I really thought of the bullying supervisors and toxic culture. So I visit this site as cheap therapy. Based on reading the posts, the majority of them must have been written by current and former employees. They are too accurate and specific for random trolls who didn’t work at Exxon to know these details.

Like you, I was interested in sharing actual EM experiences that hopefully would be beneficial, or at least educational, to other employees, especially those earlier in their career. I wish someone had warned me of the pitfalls that aren't openly discussed at EM, as opposed to learning the hard way. A few months back there were thousands of views, interesting and what appeared to be true experiences, and an up/down vote count that helped affirm reality vs fiction. However, that is all gone now. Views are often below 1000 indicating actual employee counts are probably just a couple of hundred people, personal attacks and obviously false statements dominate practically all topics, and surely everyone has figured out how easy it is to manipulate up/down vote counts. I think the site has become pretty much a wasteland dominated by trolls and those with a vendetta against EM. Too bad, because there is some good and a lot of bad to know about EM, but those messages are lost in the trash talk now. Probably my last visit to the site. Nothing to be gained here unless you thrive on chaos and hatred. Adios.

Maybe he/she just recognizes what is obvious to some of us. that here are those on here who are on their own personal "PR mission" to bash exxon on the reg. Pretty easy to spot the same language patterns. Some see this, some (like you) don't. those with the exxon hate want to believe every one hates exxon. It's a corporation, it's not perfect, but there are a whole hell of a lot worse places to be. I personally am rooting for the company to win, and I strive to help it win to the best of my ability. There are things wrong with the company, yes, but it's not a lost cause.

@atr+1a2p8VXz

Haha. Nope! Have you seen any of the surveys from the technical personnel at this company? 50% is neutral to hating this company. Do you just live in an exxonmobil bubble thinking everything is golden?

Pretty obvious there are a few high-volume posters who post only negative. They try to give the illusion of mob hatred of exxonmobil. Those with a modicum of discernment see right through them.

I work in operations at a plant in Texas. I would say this board has the nearly 95% of the talking points going on. It is EERY just hearing the people who are close to retirement saying they're so ready to be over it and the people in my group(first few years) already wanting to get out.

There was another topic on "we're lucky to have a job". lol I heard that quite a bit too. Its like such a disservice for the lab technicians/operators who always put their a– on the line to make their FLS look better. Changes like putting contractors on the same level as XOM employees for overtime(basically went from having a few OT days to basically none this year). Moving peoples regular schedule around to reduce overtime for vacation/sick leave.

OP - you forgot one group: the XOM paid PR army that cries #admin about everything posted on this board.

Excellent post. The anonymity on here is a double edged sword for sure. Then again, go look at a polarizing LinkedIn post where presumably you’re not anonymous and you’ll see similar veins of unprofessionalism. XOM has a lot of enemies, warranted or not, and recent events have only added to the pile. We’re in a grand age of disinformation and this board isn’t immune to it.

Critical thinking and being able to verify information are key to seeing through the smoke. The leaks we got last summer were a godsend, albeit risky for anyone intent on keeping their jobs. Until something of similar caliber gets out for this year, take everything here with a grain of salt.

I say this as a former employee (but again, how can you tell?), that I’m on here because the company still lives rent free in my head after what they did to me. My revenge? Make sure as many people see the light before it’s too late for them too. I’ve helped as many people as I think I can by being on this board.

Let’s not feed the trolls.

@OP+1a2p8VXz dude why dont you identify yourself? I dont believe majority of folks are from group 1 and 2 you described and that is because the amount of specific information that has been shared in this forum is very specific to XOM and it is insane to think that those dont work or know XOM will spend their precious and non-paid time to come here and rant.

Are you from camp Dwooders?
