Does anyone remember when it was difficult to get a job at Lowes? lowes could pic and choose who was best to hire. Now it seems like if you can walk in the door and are breathing you're hiredl. SAD

Last week had a group of new hires doing orientation and one of the girls that was wearing bright yellow yoga pants was sitting Indian style with her shoes off on her phone! Then when they were taken on a "tour" of the store she couldn't even tie her shoes, if you can walk and breath at the same time you're hired.

In my area they are having to raise starting pay in order to fill the multitude of open positions. Great for the new hires but is rapidly becoming a major point of contention for the tenured associates that were started much lower and in many cases are now making less than the new hires. Totally unfair and no adjustments are being made. Seems that the only way to get a meaningful pay adjustment is to change jobs within the company or simply go elsewhere. This then feeds back on itself by creating even more open positions and limited tenured associates to train them. It really is turning into a total cluster F and this outcome is totally predicitibile to anyone with half a brain. But hey, even if you don't have the staffing to close the sale be sure to ask every customer about opening a LCC and that we want nothing but 10's on our surveys.
Yes, I remember when Lowe’s used to pick and chose who to hire. Unfortunately, this new leadership in North Carolina isn’t interested in that. They want to down size the number of full timers and gut specialist positions in an effort to cut costs.
This is not a new idea by any means. Cutting employees, hours and pay is the quickest, easiest and most unimaginative way that companies have to cut overhead. It’s not necessarily the best way, in fact it’s usually self defeating because companies sacrifice customer satisfaction for cost cutting which usually just cancels each other out. Here’s a better way of putting it: You save money by cutting hours, associates and pay but you wind up creating more unsatisfied customers at the same time, which usually means that they simply shop elsewhere. The bet is that you save more money by doing this than you lose by driving away loyal customers. Not a great bet for Lowe’s since there’s a rather large orange company very close to most Lowe’s stores that are happy to take the customers.
But don’t judge our leaders in North Carolina too harshly. They aren’t exactly the best and brightest. They don’t know what to do other than this. It’s an old playbook and they aren’t lighting up the world with their innovative ideas. I mean, what else have they got? Going out on a limb isn’t exactly in the job description of retail management. They do what they know, and this is pretty much it.
Will it blow up in their faces? Yeah, probably. It did when Home Depot did this a few years back and Lowe’s seems determined to copy them in all things, no matter the cost. It’s like we’re in some kind of time warp. We look at the world as it was five or so years ago. It’s depressing actually.
But keep your chin up. Lowe’s may start paying people what their worth soon. This idea occurred to some about four or five years ago when they started giving everyone $15 an hour, so it’ll occur to our guys any time now.
