Luckily we have a good store manager and I don’t have a lot of complaints about him, but I was surprised that some here complain that their store managers are less competent than they are. It’s both funny and sad. How is it possible that the store manager does not know run the register or similar?

the company wants store managers that are young, relocatable, and that will loyally execute all of the programs that roll out from corporate. Unfortunately for store employees, things like personality and management style really don’t matter to the company as long as those bases are covered.
Our current SM is absolutely horrible. Knows the store & department stats but barks out orders and is hardly ever there. When he is there he surrounds himself with other ASMs/DMs so that there are almost always multiple layers between him and the customers. When he isn't there we are back to two managers on duty. Doubtful he would know how to correctly sell an install in any department. Our previous SM was phenomenal and deservingly got promoted to DM. That man lead by example, had an exemplary work ethic, was highly proficient in every department and it wasn't at all uncommon to see him running power equipment or loading something into a customer's car. Boy is he missed!
