To be honest, I’ve never worked in a worse company before that has so many problems that need to be fixed. I don't understand why everything should be a mess here? Why is there no will to at least solve one problem at a time? I seem to be asking a lot of this company. I hope I won't be here much longer.

When the diversity hires are actually implemented you'll know it because at the very beginning all of you who are feeling comfy and cool right now will be laid off without warning and then the army of low IQ, low production output 'diversity hires' will come marching in at pay 70% less than you. They'll also be hiring 40% more HR clowns to process all the diversity hire hijinks that will of course ensue.
I interacted with Michael off script twice during my time at Cengage. Once was at a trade show where he treated all of the frontline Cengage workers as if they were nonexistent. If you were below a VP level you were not allowed to engage with him. When he did interact with us he came off as incredibly arrogant, condescending and aloof. All of his messaging is total hypocrisy. If you're not an elite you don't exist to him.
Diversity is our greatest strength...
@bcpm+1bIWysED Watch one of those Hansen diversity videos and then look at the photo of the leadership team on Cengage's website. Perfectly sums up Hansen's never ending arrogance and hypocrisy. He is always exempt from his own advice.
Have you noticed the promotional videos that Hansen is sharing (mainly on Linkedin) promoting diversity, inclusion, greatest place to work, etc? It clearly shows how disconnected he is internally. The folks in the videos seem brainwashed and are drinking gallons of Kool-Aid. Cengage has been a disaster in the last decade. I'm stunned how many talented folks I know continue to rot their careers away there knowing there could be layoffs looming each year.
disgruntled right winger trying to bring his political talking points into a layoff rumor site.
That's unironically like 90% of posts here. That and garbage AEs complaining about DMs.
What is it with these ‘marxist’ comments when complaining about capitalist marketing? Seems like some disgruntled right winger trying to bring his political talking points into a layoff rumor site.
@4ddp+1bIWysED Spot on. The business worked ( barely) when publishers could raise prices with impunity and continue pumping out textbooks that no one used. Despite the fact that sell-through was horrible, prices were high enough and margins were good enough that it didn't matter. At the same time, publishers also were selling highly discounted new books to used book distributors, to prop up revenue.
Some huge exec. bonuses were paid due to this practice.
I've taken Masters Level classes where I bought (actually rented) the textbook, never opened it and earned an A.
My favorite was several years ago when Cengage did the roadshow to a bunch of colleges throwing silly events that no one attended. I remember one pic at Texas A&M that literally shows a student, (who was clearly there for the free food) flipping off the Cengage person taking the pic,
If that doesn't exemplify students' feelings towards publishers, nothing does.
@2wzm+1bIWysED I had roles in both product and marketing at Cengage. You only need to talk to students for 5 minutes to realize the vast majority barely touch our products unless they absolutely have to. Basically product development boils down to jumping through hoops for professors to create products and features that will barely - if ever - get used. That’s a big reason why this industry is barreling towards complete irrelevance.
Another reason why things are such a mess is that many mid and senior level managers were Peter Principled into roles they are not suited for. Talented employees don’t tend to last long at Cengage because they can make more money and have better careers elsewhere. That leaves the lifers who get promoted.
I heard it on good authority that cengage will be in the forefront in publishing CRT curriculum. I think it's important we push this marxist agenda and indoctrinate our children so that they understand in the classroom and in life that there are two groups of people in this world: the oppressed and the oppressor's. I also think it's valuable to teach them in the same fashion Chairman Mao pushed class division in that children are born racist based on the color of their skin. This is the kind of socialist / communist dogma I can get behind. I'm so happy that we will be institutionalizing racism, discrimination and picking winners and loser in life based on the color of skin that our babies are born with, plus imagine the possibilities and gains when we demand reparations from those babies!!!
Trump lives in your head Rent Free...
@1ctz+1bIWysED. So true. The business just doesn't work anymore. It worked great through the 1970's when it was essentially an oligopoly. Used books hurt it badly. The internet broke it.
Professors use you and always have. Used book buyers roamed every hall on campus with full carts. Students hate you and always have. The business is /was an echo chamber for oversized egos. A small, smug little club who cashed in on timing...not talent.
In reality, very few people actually need the product. People may not like it, but they need insurance. They need home goods. They need shoes. And on top of that, the product is pretty much horrible and it is a recipe for disaster.
It used to be "cool" to say you were in publishing. I was very proud of it. These days when I tell people what I used to do, they all go "so YOU are the person who made my textbooks so expensive."
I have it on good authority that if DRUMPH would not have been elected bonuses would have been paid for the past four years. The attack on education by DeVos and the Fuhrer who “loves the uneducated” did not bode well for those of us with advanced degrees working to better the lives of marginalized communities.
There’s nothing capitalist about cengage, it’s a rotting corpse adrift in a river of denial. Your Marxist professors only want free material paid for by others because they and their students claim to be oppressed by da ebil whyte man…
It's a consistent cashflow issue.
Cengage hasn't had the upfront money needed to invest in systems that would clean up the mess. Instead, they diverted engineering resources to "create their own" systems and billed it to senior leadership as something they need to do because the programs/systems out there "didn't fit our particular needs".
So the mess has continued to get bigger every year, which also means every single year it will take more upfront cost to fix.
I'll leave it to you to guess how that problem disappears.
Simple, you have 'leadership' by attrition so that ineffective manipulative bottom feeders are in DM positions who then manage up, making sure their lo----e superiors don't axe them so they scapegoat everyone else beneath them selecting winners and losers in the game. Through disorganized layoffs and counterproductive consolidation you find marginally competent people now incorrectly doing the work of three people without an increase in income. Intelligent people have already left this meat grinder long ago, the pathetic socialist democrat marxists remain and are clawing their way to the top by smashing and sacrificing what's left of the people below them, these are disgusting people not worthy to be in the presence of most of us. The product and the customer are completely irrelevant, this is a massive collective slave ship, been taking on water for a decade and it's obviously sinking. Who's actually left? The worst and a few innocent victims.
