Thread regarding Norfolk Southern Corp. layoffs

I made almost $7k in 2 weeks as a conductor

They have no people. They are using regular pools as extraboards all over. Guys are making obscene amounts of money due to their cutting people. So why are there people here claiming they are down and out at NS? Change crafts and go into T&E if you are laid off and youll work everyday an rake it in

NS breaks HOS all the time with targeted deadheads and holding aft past 24 hrs then calling you 10 mins after your starts reset. I don’t know about you but I don’t consider hotel time β€œrest”, more like jail time

the old school guys didn't have to put up with it because the union was strong and would back them up. good luck with that today.

I think it's mainly because the employees of today are afraid of management. The old school guys wouldn't put up with it.

I’m not so sure the FRA would do anything about it right now. Back in the day, no doubt. But now? Don’t see it happening until there’s a major accident.

One man crew is on the horizon ! The carriers will wave carrots πŸ₯• to the engineers to help get rid of lazy a-s sleeping πŸ’€ conductors and the useless gutless unions cannot stop it ! So bank it while you can ! The carriers always win !!

I'm not sure of why the HOS rules are being debated?

This is why it was debated. You answered your own question as you kept talking about HOS and penalties. The fact of the matter is all an employee would have to is get ahold of the FRA and it's going to stop dead in it's tracks. The employee would not be held accountable if he/she was forced to break the HOS laws. They cannot make you work more than 6 days in a row without 48 hours off. If said employee doesn't raise a stink about it, then that's on them.

OK was that before or after taxes? If you say it's after taxes, and your actual take-home is 7k, then you're full of doo doo. I'm not sure of why the HOS rules are being debated. If there's conductors want to work, then the company can fudge the numbers very easily to keep everyone in compliance. The only problem is that when the company gets caught, then sadly the conductor will go down with them as a willful violator. You want to guess how much the fine is? Here's a hint, it's more than 7k! Oh and there's a good chance you'll never be able to hold any job that falls under HOS.

You guys saying it BS and HOS wont let you make that much are deluded- The Company can reset your starts with a deadhead or keeping you an hour past 24 in away hotel. I worked 12 days straight this way recently. I know an Engineer who made $8700 in 2 weeks. Conductors who made $6k in 2 weeks. You get a PH claim for rescuing a train out of yard limits then you have an easy $1000 day. With current shortages of workers in T&E it is not only possible but probable that guys are making this kind of money. Its not about being a company man- it about not wanting to get handled for attendance because they are cracking down cuz everyone is calling off sick to try to get time off. They are going after FMLA now even with dedicated tattle-tale emails to rat your coworkers for abusing FMLA

7k is totally possible. Im not in Transportation, but I do have an Engineer friend who was routinely making 6k -7k halfs.....was on engineers extraboard and being used as a conductor at an outline point. So he was getting conductors pay, engineers extraboard gaurantee, mileage, etc....

You must have no life at all bro! Get off that train and get laid once in awhile. It's far better than bragging about a company that Is about to sh-t on you! What a loser you are!

I understand HOS very well! Been there nearly 25 years. You can boast all you want company man, but the fact of the matter is you're still full of sh-t!

To the one who calls BS on that not sure if your from another craft who doesn’t understand HOS but that’s completely possible. Between over time held away the moneys there and starts can easily be broken by deadheads or laying in hotel for over 24hours. Not to mention flip trips and also getting called for relief service and have im here multiple PH claims. Made over 1500$ for a single days work for multiple trains being relieved and being paid the PH claims for all of them.

Sure you can rake it in....ns now using engineers extra board to cover conductors spots on ground, yRd men used to cover remaining yard master spots, contracts null and void, ask for a day off. Keep bragging fool and ask yourself why very few people want these jobs...one man crew soon while they combine your tie up screens, used to get 2 now you get 1.

I call big time BS on this. Hours of Service wouldn't allow you to work that many hours in order for you to make nearly 7k in weeks at the current hourly rate including overtime!

Those who want to "Rake it in" I'm happy for you. Put some up just in case. Lets face it as a whole we have an Older Work Force left. Men and Women more established in life. I for one am tired of working O.T. I dont have much but most everything is paid for . I chased the dollar when I was younger. Ready to spend my last 10 yrs out here primarly on 40hr weeks.

Don't get to use to that cash. It's a trap. Autonomous trains have already been tested and are in the future soon as everyone gets paid off.

NS will find a way to lay you off soon enough.

Rake it in and save it up while you can. One man crews is around the corner. Not the time to come in at the bottom and make that $600 a week or $750 every 2 weeks after tax for 6 months before getting the ax.
