Does it also seem to you that talented people have never stayed in this company as short as now? I am glad when such people go as soon as possible to a place where they can better develop their skills, but it is sad what the company has turned into. People come, see that they won’t make much progress and take their great ideas somewhere else. Some of them might've stayed if only they saw that top dogs had at least some vision for the future of this company.

They were worse in the 90s before merging with Conoco. Then gradually all that was good in either of the two companies was lost and the ARCO people took over. Too much infighting between the COC and P The ARCO people never understood downstream or midstream and so we had the spin-off. So much talent wasted over 4 decades.

They were worse in the 90s. I worked at R&D for almost 30 yrs and received 1 promotion early in my career. After that any career movement was essentially an HR job grade adjustment. If you survived long, and started in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s, you felt that every day was your last day on the job. If one was highly skilled and needed by management, they'd slow walk any release of publications to inhibit the individual from finding a better job elsewhere. When I first started, a manager asked, "Have you bought a house yet?" I said," Yes." His reply was, "Now we have you." One professional never was promoted. During the 80s and 90s it was tough finding jobs elsewhere in the industry and management took full advantage of that fact. This professional stayed until retirement. He asked a young manager why he never was promoted. The manager told him it was the way he dressed. The professional wore professional white shirt, tie, black pants and black leather shoes. The manager said it was the white socks worn with the black shoes that made the difference. The professional said he wore white socks to protect his feet because he was a brittle diabetic and was trying to keep his toes. So much for working hard and being responsible. Someone once said, " You can't be significant and employed there simultaneously." Im sure that's doubly true today.
Very true - if new hires knew that they would receive a salary grade increase a few years after starting and then remain in that grade for the next 15-20 years, they wouldn't have accepted the job in the first place.
