folks in this forum both tear down IBM and yet consistently compare them to the top 5 companies on the planet

Because we are sad to watch our once-great company decline so much. IBM used to be top 5.

Realistically there are thousands of people turned down at every company for a variety of reasons, ranging from lack of skills to some form of bias. IBM is no different. It is interesting how the folks in this forum both tear down IBM and yet consistently compare them to the top 5 companies on the planet.

I just had to spell "Programmer" correctly!

Based on many of the posts on this forum, it seems that the IBM spelling test has not been given in recent decades.

My Dad did a lot of bragging when I got hired by IBM in 1968. What special skills did I need to get the job? I just had to spell "Programmer" correctly!

CC&S is currently hiring… they are so desperate to get bodies that anyone with some experience will get hired.

All you need is a heartbeat. That was the requirement in DBG and now C&CS

I applied for a job at IBM many times in the 90's only to be rejected, despite having a skillset I thought they needed. In 2001, a friend of mine managed to get hired by them, and he was well respected. Pretty soon he recommended me and I was hired (even with a hiring bonus!). It's not always what you know but who you know. Once I got in, I realized the company didn't match the outsiders perception. I took too long doing it, but eventually I had to quit.

You know the blog author has ZERO credibility when he opens with this:

"It can be difficult to pinpoint IBM’s area of specialization because the tech company excels in so many areas."

I just left a 30+ year job at IBM. If you want a job at IBM the only skill you need is how to spell cloud. The only reason anyone will work there anymore is if they have been rejected by GCP, AWS and Azure.

Everyone I know at IBM either got hired through acquisition by IBM of the company they use to work for, or through a contract that IBM low balled their way into and acquiring the previous contractors that used to work for the company that lost the contract.

Parent bragging to other parents "My child just got hired at IBM."
One of the other parents response "What did they have to do to get a job at IBM? Walk through the front door."

It's pretty simple. Don't need an article. Know someone, sleep with someone, pictures of someone, relative to someone. That should about cover it.
