Thread regarding Marathon Oil Corp. layoffs

Gone Woke

I’m not an employee but am looking and have received one offer already, with another likely in the next few weeks. I do not want to go to work for a “woke” company, ie, one that promotes on any basis other than merit. Through my contacts, I have heard that Marathon rewards it’s people fairly, with the good ones rising and rewarded fairly. Would non-HR people please confirm? Marathon is one of the companies I am considering.

You will get more responsibilities based on merit, but you will not be adequately compensated or recognized. Good luck on your choice. I would not recommend employment at marathon to friends or family

Good luck on whatever you decide. I plan to leave marathon after march 1st. I will not be the only one leaving this march either

Yep. I know exactly who you’re talking about. Corrupt as heck and loves to talk even in a room full of people looking at him like he’s an id--t. Total narcissist.

I was a supervisor and knew all the rankings for the employee in the calibration sessions I was a part of. I also could tell my own rating from language my boss would use in my YE reviews and my bonus percent from year to year.

I was never told directly, but they'd use the same phrases and context clues for each of the tiers. MRO management was big on defining what each tier meant with phrases.

I know what tier I rank and my peers others rank because a specific manager in IT likes to talk.

Whatever you do don’t head to MRO. It has become a stain on most people’s resumes especially if you’re a petrotech. If you aren’t not still stay away especially from land, HR, supply chain and IT. I left voluntarily and never looked back. The amount of corruption will make you regret your decision if you’re a decent human being. While there are several good managers, most of them will talk about you prior to year end reviews outside of work and negotiate using you like pawns to reward their favorites. Then, as you’re out the door, they will steal all of your work and tout it as their own. For your mental health, stay away from this company!

What percentage of target was the bonus approved at 125% 150%?

Disgruntled employees usually have some high level of reality/truth with their complaints.

You ranking is not told to you, but you might be able to figure it out based off of your bonus %.

What a bunch of whiny entitled babies. You don't like MRO, but you must like that fat paycheck if you don't quit.

How do you guys even know what your ranking is? I thought know one knew unless they were in the bottom rank.

This persons asks a legitimate question & immediately the HR shills jump all over him. Many (of us) are SICK & TIRED of political wokeness being used to protect the leadership, but suppress the working person. Tune out HR, we already KNOW how you feel, as incompetence is a condition precedent to enrollment into your rank of incompetents.

Career advice from the layoff is top notch.

I don’t think anyone is salty. Each department seems VERY different. There are several groups with the old school good old boy mentality where only white men get promoted. Then there are other groups where if the person in charge is not a white male they only promote other minorities and women. It’s 50/50. Neither group seems to promote on merit but promote and reward based on favoritism. Now before anyone says I’m salty. I know how to kiss a-s and play the game so I know I got raises and bonuses based on a-s kissing and playing the favorite and not because I’m stellar at what I do.

This is an odd place to ask such a question. You will be hearing from the most salty and bitter individuals who lurk here, some of which no longer employees.

If looking for a genuine response, you should network and ask individuals.

I call BS, OP is a troll.

In my experience, marathon rewards the top performers very well. Be warned, it is very difficult to get the top rating (T1) and is very dependent on your boss. If you're not a T1, life can still be good, but just know that everybody else is disposable, even the T2s.

Also, it takes nearly a miracle to get promoted internally and years (not kidding) of your boss working with HR. Heaven forbid you change teams during that time.

Do your job and kiss ***. That's how you succeed at Marathon.

Haha! Again with the merit based company! You must be one of the ones that believes you are getting by on “merit” when I reality you probably have your nose stuck up someone’s behind! Or you are HR trying to desperately hire people because nobody wants to come work for this company… I mean what could be better than getting a monetary bonus after a great year?!? How about a yeti cup and some Amazon dollars! Those go real far nowadays!

Congratulations on your offer! MRO is a great company to work for and you get what you put in and effort and potential is valued. Ignore these naysayers who can’t handle a merit based company. Many of them are salty because they were held accountable and fired or will be fired when they couldnt make the grade. Good Luck!

Bahahaha! Your contacts are either lying to you or have been promoted due to “merit”.

I’m no longer employed there. In my time (10+ years) there I never thought the company was woke or attempting to be. Things can change of course. Favoritism and the good ol boy network is how Marathon works.
