Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

20 years

I have 20 working in another craft and now I see they are hiring train crew in my location finally. Couple questions 1 can train crew be bumped to farther away spots to work and 2 is it really worth it to switch after all this time

Ok thanks everyone. Sounds like I need to stay where I'm at. Was just thinking about changing it up but Sounds like it might not be worth it

What in the he-l would you do that for???? Let me guess some train crew told you they make 200,000$ a year?? Exconductor 2008. Don't do it!

The previous posts are correct, they are actually coming from somebody with knowledge instead of some of the other posts made by trolls. Unless you can keep your seniority from your previous craft, which normally isn't the case, don't do it. I've seen kids and adults with families give up their previous job only to get laid off after getting qualified.

If you enjoy the work you do now, why change to a different dept . now ? You give up 20 years of stability and knowledge in the job you do now. We need to remember that UP cancelled 11,000 is so jobs these last few years. Indeed it is true that 1 man train crews will be used some for the out of town jobs someday. Ptc makes it possible as it becomes more developed and reliable.

That would be the d-mbest thing you ever did. Why give up 20 years seniority to work an extra board for years? Train crews will eventually go to one man crews and that another reason to stay away from transportation.

Don't fu----g do it. Yes you can be bumped all over your seniority district. They will hire you , train you , set you up to work and furlough you a week later for 6 months. There was a new hire class in St. Paul a few years ago that finished all their class work and testing then was immediately furloughed without ever having a single day of OJT. UP will add to the boards on a Thurs/Fri just for a weekend calling people back off furlough and then cut the boards again on Monday. Don't risk it
