Actually, it is cheaper for companies to pay the settlement than to track and pay out overtime. That's why it happens all the time. It's really one of those business as usual costs. By paying out the $, it allows them to wipe the slate clean until the next lawsuit. And then it starts all over again.
if you split up the $15M over the number of employees to pay out, it really is not as much as the actual overtime that should have been paid out.
