Thread regarding DST Systems layoffs

I didn't write the code knucklehead! Layoffs are good!

I am a non-technical person supporting an application at DST. The program's code was written at a time when I was in Middle School. Yes I was about 15 years old. But when it doesn't work my manager blames me? And puts the preassure on me - the screwups all on my back? While the joker that wrote the code is still at DST in another dept and he doesn't even get a phone call, or get called on the carpet, or get a bad review for poor coding and screwing up the clients data? Yes I am non-technical, have never coded 9and can't) a single line of code,. Yet this is all my problem? Is my manager insane? DST has the most stupid Managers ever.

DST was a horrible place to work from 1979 to 1988, even with the Tom management. It was always said DST means "dont stay there". College grads from highly ranked colleges were started at McDonald's level wages. I left after 2 years of wasted time.

DST's code was so bad that when I offered it to Sungard they didn't want it. Theirs was better.

Word, the applications there are sooo much garbage. I felt sorry for anyone in a client facing role that had to answer for that cr-p. Constant outages and bugs, corrupted data. There was an app there that was fine for many years, but since it was written in some homegrown, non maintained framework, they had some of their new and shiny offshore devs rewrite it. Took them 8 years and boy did they eff that stuff up. The offshore devs could do the basics well enough, but they didn't know how to architect an app to NOT fall over every 30 minutes.

And management doesn't care at all. They don't have budget or resources to hire capable people. They are just managing the decline so the company can extract as much money as possible from the existing customers, before shutting the whole thing down. This is not a company where anyone with options wants to work!

Great place to moon light and pull two paychecks if you have the skills though!

Not only do you get blamed for others mistakes at DST, they never even explained what I should do in a Tornado or earthquake situation. I worked there in the 1990's and there is no way DST prepared anyone (or cared) about such an event. They still let co-workers smoke in the buildings and coat everything in the office is foul smelling cig vapors. DST H.R. would allocate little round black ashtrays to all the smokers for free. When I worked late I would take them off desks and throw them in the trash cans in the bathroom. But H.R. kept issuing new ashtrays - a full 50 years after the US Surgeon General issued the first cig warning. Surprised a DST associate, a non-smoker, has not sued DST for lung cancer caused by their liberal smoking policy! Such a bad workplace and worthless H.R. department run by a former church worker who wore "the cloth"

Just rewrite it in basic, and run it in DOS.

I feel your pain, we used to receive all kinds of blame for things outside of our job scope. Yes, we too would blamed by issues caused by development when they were out of our control. So we had to take on responsibilities for those all around us even above and below us. It was totally exhausting and a testimonial to poorly run org.
