Close to retirement

Pretty much everyone advises that it may be better for those close to retirement to stay here.
Nobody says how close to retirement though???
I know of some people who very close to their retirement and got laid off anyway which makes me very unsure whether to stay or leave.

How close , well 1.5 years if I feel like staying that long or it could be after the US holiday. I get paid to do almost nothing , I get sick time off, paid vacation officially up to 10 days every two months. Why leave ?

sit back, do little as possible, don't do overtime, farm as much work and decision making to your colleagues and assignment managers - Work / depts likely to ship over from US, Western Europe to lower cost centres anyway in Asia - so wait for the eventual WFR or retirement stage.

No point in putting yourself under pressure, stress for this %^%^%^ of a company

it really depends on which country you are based in - US "benefits" for WFR are very low but in other countries you could easily get several months payout (and favorable tax treatment of the pay out to make it even better). In those cases being laid off in the final year or two before retirement makes no difference or even leaves you better off
