Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Northern Region brilliance.

Costs per car is $3 to high in the Northern Region. The solution is to cut 5 starts per terminal. Brilliant. Cars are bottle necked because there aren't enough crews and power right now. Yards are plugged because cars can't leave. This leaves no room to switch. Less cars get switched , more cars build up. So the genius plan is to cut jobs to save money.
The remaining jobs can just do more work. Makes sense. Pay 2 crews 8 hours of time n half each day. Cause 8 hours of overtime is clearly cheaper than 8 hours of straight time. They're also going to work at a slower pace over 12 hour than they would at 8. So you're paying more and losing productivity. Genius , absolutely genius. Oh and the cars are still backing up because there is no power to move em.
This cycle of course repeats itself over and over and UP doesn't learn because you can spell stupid without UP and we have people running UP who barely qualify to be mop boys at the adult theater.

We had alittle over 150,000 carloads last week, We should be able to handle this easily, Our yards shouldn’t start backing up till we get in the 220,000 range. They shot themselves in the foot

I work in a northern terminal and they can’t hire decent people anymore. I think many of the guys already employed are looking for other opportunities it’s getting really old working here. I thought the beginning of PSR was bad but good grief it just keeps getting worse! No wonder this place is falling apart this company doesn’t want to hire anyone if they did they would be offering hiring incentives and pay bumps for current employees.

This place is a joke! They take NO responsibility for their actions and blame the customers! I watch trains sit for hours & days in NP because of NO crews and NO power. Thiis is ALL the result of Omaha.

The truth is that when the railroad pays overtime with less people, it is cheaper for them than paying straight time with more people. Why ? They are saving more by not paying into Tier 1, medical benefits, etc etc. But they have cut too deeply and they know it, and it is harder to find people interested in a railroad career today, especially with having a reputation in the toilet.
