UP has finally managed to hire a young and capable person. This does not happen very often. I feel sad when I see with how some of the newbies invest so much enthusiasm into their job here.
But it's hard to advice someone "don't try too hard because UP has a habit of hiring and firing very quickly" without being totally misunderstood.

Don't be upset when you get furloughed, just find another job and forget that place.
What new hires need to know about UP? I'm pretty sure this has been answered many times already. The answer is simple, DON'T APPLY!
Why tell them anything? Let them learn just like we did.
My old timer that trained me tried to give me his hot dog but I said no thanks.
When I first started I thought the old heads were just lazy and cranky. Now I understand why they were that way.
When I started I was told by the old heads “dont buy anything for 5yrs” I kinda heeded that advice. I didnt finance anything, what I bought I paid for in full. Sure as heck my class started getting cut off after turning & burning consistently for a few years. I am glad those old timers gave me that good advice.
What you need to know if you get hired for UP. They will talk nice to you , groom you , give you good atta boys. And then backstab you. You will work under constant threats of gettin fired. And then you will get job insurance if you stay that long.
I’d tell them to stay a year or two to get something on their resume and then move on to something better like everyone other capable young person does. Nothing wrong with that. It’s on UP to give them a reason to stay not anyone else.
What new hires need to know about UP - they made a mistake.
Their enthusiasm will quickly fade, give it time.
Why would you give them any advice line that? Let them do their job and you do yours. Sometimes it’s best to mind your own business.
