Unnecessary layers of management

Hopefully if WB comes and buys the company, he will realize we do not need all these unnecessary layers of overpaid management. It adds so much unnecessary red tape when trying to get anything done.

Promoted early so they can “learn” their new position and the company get 15 good years out of them. That’s why it’s difficult to move from the technical ladder to management when you are in your late 30’s- early 40’s. Heard it and seen it many times in my career. Good Luck!

They need another VSP but this time include upper management.
Also, why do people fresh from school want to advance through the management route. There is enough opportunity for advancement through the technical ladder. They shouldn’t be promoting people into management until they have mastered the technical no matter what kind of leaders the are.

Totally agree. Not unique to OXY and I am certain there are bloated org charts everywhere. Flattening the org chart requires senior management to give front line managers and senior staff more responsibility (budgets, goals ,staffing and project execution) and ultimately accountability for their actions. I have found that people will take on the added responsibility but do not necessarily enjoy the accountability when the results are negative.
The bloating of management also comes from the wish of everyone out of university to be the president of the company. Promotions are on a short timeline/fast tracked ...I've seen people moved into management far sooner than they are qualified. Some succeed...many fail. Companies need to better manage career growth and technical/management paths. Good Luck!
