Thread regarding Shopify layoffs

How will it happen?

Are people already being notified? Is everybody going to know now or will they spread it out and have us worry and stress over it for who knows how long? This isn't just 50 people (not that I'm minimizing their layoffs) but we're talking thousands. Any one of us could be affected.

I've been counting the vault and slack profiles being deactivated daily. I stopped counting at 346 because they started hiring 200+ support advisors from Philippines same time as firing people. They've issued even more performance improvement (PIP) plans and are using those as a means to stop paying new compensation to those people that pass, and terminating with cause the others that don't pass. They control their own narrative, first they leaked themselves the 50 layoffs (it was more like 300-500 fired May-June). Now they've made it seem like they are super sorry and generous with the 1000+layoffs. Next week they fire another 10% without such generosity.

I don't work at Shopify, & I'm sorry you're dealing with this.
Common practice nowadays - you can see articles on this - is notifying people quickly. When I was laid off (not Shopify), we had a group meeting, mandatory, everyone, over zoom. HR was on the call, & so was a VP that we never, ever saw. We were told that some of us would stay on for another week, others for the next month. We were told to come in to work the next day, & that HR would call us individually to talk about next steps.

The reality..... it actually happened quicker. Me and several of my peers were told
that THIS (day after group meeting) would be our last day. And our access was turned off after we (individually) talked to HR. Equipment mailed back in. They emailed us transition info (severance, etc).

So.... expect it to happen quickly. Clean out any personal files NOW. Try not to panic. I know it's hard. Bookmark the website for unemployment to your personal device.

Make sure you have any phone #s for people you want to stay in contact with (if any).

Get copies of your paystubs/w2 NOW. Email to your personal device if needed.

If you work in office, start taking stuff home so you don't have to make an awkward exit from the office, feeling emotional.
