Voluntary layoffs

From comments on this board, I think there would be more than enough people who would jump at an opportunity to leave with severance. I don't see why Avaya wouldn't offer voluntary buyouts before it starts implementing involuntary layoffs. This would be a win/win situation.

All...the laws in Europe are such that it isn't as easy to flio the switch and begin the layoff machine. AVAYA must honor what they promised the market and cut $250m in employee costs off the books. So the quickest and easiest way to achieve is US, followed by non euro countries. Then Europe.

In the US you get the following:

Level 4-20 - 6 weeks
Level 30 - 6 weeks with < 5 years service else 8 weeks
Level 40 - 8 with < 5 else 10 weeks
Level 45 - 11 with < 5 else 15

Severance starts they day you get the email and is not paid out until the end of the month after you sign a release form.

And wait until you see the COBRA costs…

INCORRECT.
The reality of layoffs is the following:

  1. BY REGION -- Canada, EMEA has rules they must follow
  2. UNION OBLIGATIONS -- People have posted general ex Lucent/AT&T/BELL LABS have ties to union pre-negotiated deals. Current comments posted here share 6 weeks/year of service, Capping at 60 weeks. Please share what you all know.
  3. Nortel or Not Nortel -- Your 20 years service is pretty much meaningless outside of the Above 2 rules. Being Ex Nortel does not earn you some huge severance. Labor laws don't force, especially in the US. However, they will follow an algorithm based on years of service. Last round was just 6 weeks total for everyone in US.

THEY HAVE $11Million to spread for all layoffs. DO THEY MATH.

Avaya has old staff from Nortel days working 20 years which requires huge severance cost so they decided to start from low severance package first

The problem is that the people they really need to STAY would potentially want to leave. Hope that answers your question.
