Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

New grad here

Hey everyone. I received a full time offer in PE/Geo program in Gulf of Mexico.
I have heard that offshore is a good place to work, especially from a Big Major, but the skillset developed cannot directly applied in unconventional which limited the place you can go. Is that true?
I have a different offer from Oxy for unconventional. The pay and benefits are comparable. I know it’s a smaller company comparing to Shell, but I want to make sure I’m picking a long-term career that allows me to work for 30-40 years. Any advice is appreciated!

Ther is no long term company in oil and gas these days. Neither Oxy nor Shell will offer you that. Take Steve Miller Band advice "go on take the money and run".

You will likely earn more in the short to medium term if you work for Shell, but job security is probably not as high in here considering your position. Good luck with your decision.

Shell is transitioning to new energies so deepwater will be sold very soon. Oxy already has a strategy where it will be fully vested in unconventionals. Based on our comment of a 40 year career, I would recommend to go to Oxy.

Shell trains you well. Once you're trained and able to work independently, you can take that experience elsewhere if you want.
