When the VP approaches a test engineer to ask something that he has easily google or ask an architect , you know how close they are. The problem is the test engineer also doesnt know and he asks around to get the answer.
So VP feels comfortable telling this test engineer that he doesnt know basic networking protocols. Sr Test engineer is willing to ask basic functioning questions with architects, and covers up how ignorant VP is .
In return this engineer gets promotion and all unethical behaviour and incompetencies is covered up by VP.
So if you had covered up for any of the ignorant bosses you will be retained. If you dont have a weakness to be exploited, then your bad feeling is correct
If you dont fit into the ecosystem , then you will be sidelined and career closed.
It is not about merit .
If you oppose any of the 4-5 powerful friends of the leaders, then you will be blacklisted.
You will be the cautionary tale.
Bay area is a good example.
