Thread regarding Emerson Electric Co. layoffs

Why Return to Emerson?

I’m seeing former Emerson employees who left within the past two years returning to Emerson. If you left Emerson, why would you return? Many people leave for higher pay elsewhere or for a promotion that they couldn’t get at Emerson because they haven’t put in their time. Personally, if I were to leave an organization, I would not go back. Would your previous coworkers even treat you well? I think people will think you’re a higher risk for leaving again.

With some scenarios I had seen whilst at Emerson they leave because of low pay, the the department struggles without their skills and ask them to come back at higher pay. Or in some instances as a contractor.

We have an older engineer who constantly bad mouthed Emerson/MMI. couldn’t wait to retire and took an early out. Now he’s back, in a different dept. Looking like a punk B…. Yeah, he couldn’t wait to leave, but now he’s back. Lost all respect for that guy. All blow and no go.

Emerson lays off long term employees without batting an eye. New employees don’t realize that.

For some people, Emerson is the best they can hope for.

That is not unique to Emerson. People move around. But I also don’t think the vast majority of people are going back. At least none of the people I know left.

Personally I would never work at Emerson again. The industry doesn’t align with my values. There are efforts to paint the company as a key player in sustainability. Yet most of the revenues to this day are from oil and gas. I wouldn’t go back even if they paid me double.

However the part you state about being a risk. Why should others care. Do your job. Most jobs now have people coming and going. Also why should individual contributors, even management feel the need to make an employee feel bad because they quit and came back. It’s not like they own the company lol.

Whenever people leave for better opportunities it’s a good thing. No one should think any less of them. Even if you dislike the person. Even in that case it will be a net positive for your team and company.
