Back to the end of year performance, any views on how to make sure you are in atleast the strong category?

Only way you get into “lower” category is if you pi-s off your manager (or their manager), or you totally **** the bed somehow.
Higher and outstanding reserved for brown-nosers only!
Pretty sure strong is given just for showing up with a heartbeat in new scale/grouping. Makes job easier for managers so there’s no real hard conversations and when 80%+ of your team all get 1.0 who's going to be upset?? Now there’s zero incentive to excel, at least after you are finally broken and realize a high performer and the building id--t both get same factor!! Haha

It's already in the books for 2022.
For future years ask straight up during midyear review what your performance rating is at midyear. Chickenshit managers may not tell you otherwise. Ask what you should do to bring it up if they say it's borderline.
