Thread regarding Pearson PLC layoffs

"Over 2/3rds of the people we laid off were women. Now sit down and listen to how much we care about DE&I."

@dkbg+1jXJaquB if asking ‘Why’ gets you let go….good! Any organization that doesn’t ask itself that question with every decision, does not deserve the individuals who aren’t afraid to question those decisions and/or ask why they were made.

I would agree in normal times no cares or thinks about academic publishing but times have changed. This year Pearson had a textbook banned from Florida because one problem mentioned parents of the same s-x. The governor called it out and made a big deal about it and these types of stories rally the troops and help politicians on the right get elected.

@enyz+1jXJaquB News flash. Literally no one on the planet outside of those in the echo chamber care one bit about academic publishing.

I find it funny how we are going to the belly of the beast (Florida) to do DEI training. Wait until Fox news and DeSantis hear about an academic publisher having training on Diversity Equity and Inclusion. Move over Disney they will have a new punching bag on the sins of the left.

@ango+1jXJaquB when the position data was released a few years ago, it quantified what you observe. Loads of diversity in the lowest paid worker categories. Far less diversity starting with entry level manager categories with sharp declines up to the highest levels.
There was supposed to be a release of this information annually but nothing so I assume it hasn't changed.

@7gxa+1jXJaquB Asking "Why" is asking to be let go.

It seems every Pearson Zoom or Teams call is 2/3rds women, so that makes sense to me. Maybe they should have identified as men to ensure their survival.

Pearson is blatantly racist in its hiring, firing, layoff, and promotion practices. Take a stroll through their Minneapolis, Owatonna, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, San Antonio, or Austin facilities, and you'll see a clear absence of non-white employees in any leadership capacity roles. Yet they host meetings on DE&I talking points probably just to comply with federal and state contract rules.

It all gets thrown out the door when you’re on life support as Pearson is. No “infinite game” or “whys”. I’ve literally been told “now is not the time for that” when I questioned an inequitable decision.

Counterfeit behavior has and still runs rampant!

You guys need to get off this website and complete your DEI training modules before the NSM. We're going to have some great sessions focusing on inclusion and diversity. It's going to be thrilling. And we have all new lanyards and name tags with pronoun buttons you can attach! I just hope my teleprompter is working because I have no clue how to speak off the cuff or glamp at all.

It's a racist culture. All the performative nonsense means nothing when it's time to act. The DEI talk is fake. Pretending to hold certain values is more offensive than not saying anything at all.

I can’t account to the number of women vs men that were laid off. I am a woman of color, and I let’s just said the experience I encountered with leadership was rather r*cist throughout my time there

Pearson has been laying off thousands of people of all races, genders, se-ual orientation, ages, nationalities, abilities and disabilities for more than a decade.

So it would make sense that more women were laid off than men.

I would bet that right around 2/3 of the Pearson workforce is women.

What is the male/female composition of the company? In my experience women outnumber men significantly.

Pearson has been hemorrhaging talented women of color for the past two years. But if you ask leadership, it's just a "coincidence" (what I was actually told).
