Thread regarding IBM layoffs

CIO colocation layoffs March 10th

The ax just came down to what few people remain WFH due to closed offices to have to go into the office 3 days a week. I'm off to get my resume in order and start applying. They are literally shooting themselves in the foot with some financial applications as there will be zero US support, but corporate knows best it seems.

Please keep anonymous, I am in HR organisation and had confirmation today same 3 days RTO in USA applies across all HR organisation including those in Consulting. I expect many will be forced out as I know plenty who let their manager flag go so they could stay last year.
Also been told today we have to have 20% people as “growth opportunity” in the ratings and 5% flagged as “low performer” (probably to be put on a PIP and forced out later in the year).

With the Facebook account replacing @alliance (Watching IBM) there is a comment there from an HR source (Anon of course) https://www.facebook.com/alliancemember/ I suggest that all employee's read it.
Also there is a major recruitment drive in our favorite country which coincides with the US HR actions - waiting for the hammer to also drop in Europe.

RTO / consolidation has been going on for years within IBM, depending on your organization. The excuse is always efficiency, but the underlying answer always boils down to cutting costs. IBM’s management knows 85-90% of folks impacted will not move, but rather accept the parting gifts. Welcome to the commoditization of labor. India has an excess of labor right now, and IBM and other large multinationals will rush to exploit that. RTO is just the tool to get the process moving along.

It's not a matter of which orgs, it's when. It's rolling thunder and all orgs at IBM will soon be affected with this co-location mandate. Best to prepare to either move or be laid off. Whichever hits first, or worse, you move then you are laid off. Ugh. Good luck everyone.

IBM management has been thrashing for decades. They operate on a quarter-by-quarter basis, having endless all-hands meetings in many departments when it looks like they won't make their quarterly financial numbers.

What this means to the average employee is that management will say anything and threaten anything to the staff in order to save the department(s) and the organization at large. Yeah, tell them they'll be let go if they don't move...they'll probably be let go even if they do move, but management only cares about today and this quarter...not tomorrow, not next quarter and not next year. The axe blade swings at managers too...remember that. They'll say whatever they must to save themselves.

Please understand that when you're told to relocate or be let go that if you relocate there is a very strong chance that you still get RA'ed 12-18 months in the future. Consider whether you really want to go through the trouble of moving your family across the country only to get laid off anyway.

@OP+1jh5vv8xz My last account I was on before being RA IBM used a cheap 3rd party company for anything to be touched. Found out my last month that that 3rd company couldn't reload an OS on a server and my DPE asked me nicely to go do it. Then after being out of IBM for 2 months the tech from that company called me for help. Told him I'm not with IBM any more he then asked what he should do I said call India since there was no more US support for that account

Sad how IBM is treating its employees. I know of a few people who were notified today that RTO of 3 days is now required for everyone. They were provided their new locations and told they had 30 days to relocate. These are employees who live 3 plus hours away from the nearest office and are not managers. F&O is about to wreck havoc on a lot of lives while Jim Kavanaugh and Joan Wright continue to collect big checks and host meeting for their fans. I have also heard that Q2C is officially he-l and being ran into the ground by its leaders. Those being let go or have gone consider it a blessing because the ship will continue to take on water.
