I'm curious if any of you would quit if we get five-day RTO. A lot of people are posturing and saying they would, but as was the case with other companies that instituted this rule, I somehow doubt that many would go through with it. Gone are the days when remote jobs were plentiful, so we could find an easy alternative.

Any RTO causes the best performers to leave. Useless employees can’t get another job so will comply. Productivity goes down, revenue & market share also retreat. You may save short-term $$ but your future is f-kd
I heard that remote will no longer be allowed if you live within 90 minutes of the office
The Law of Unintended Consequences is universal, and I suspect Dell may be in for a rude surprise if they actually pull the trigger on mandatory 5-day RTO and the "relocate or leave" policy.
I was part of the Broadcom-eats-VMware fiasco, and BC recently issued this same mandate in the U.S. In typical BC ready-fire-aim fashion, their existing offices were already quite full and put simply there is nowhere near enough space to accommodate everyone. Now they are rumored to be looking into flex-space options around the U.S. (and I think also in Canada?). Meanwhile hundreds of BC employees are left in the breeze, many sleepless at night worried about their jobs, because they are not allowed to be assigned to the nearest existing office.
I know a senior (ex-VMW) leader at BC who lives ~100km from Toronto, who is willing to su-k up a nasty daily commute but who was informed his only option was to relocate to Vancouver because BCs Toronto office is full. The rumor that BC "may" secure flex space floats around internally like a fa-t in the wind, with few details communicated to employees. So, he and his family are walking on egg shells worried the axe will come down, or they'll be forced to relocate 3,000 miles away so he can (hopefully) keep his job.
What an utter fiasco. The hit to morale is just incredible. Dell may be heading for a similar future.
I know one person who was working in two companies. But this person had two employment contracts what is in our country illegal and spent more time in other company. This person was fired from Dell.
I already left and got a remote job. I feel bad for anyone still at Dell with all the drama looming. I keep my ears open for any job I can recommend my previous coworkers for at my new company. Yall all deserve better than what Dell is doing now.
I will nit leave, but I'll work office hours only then. 9 to 6, that's it. Even though I'm part of a global team I won't bother anymore to work outside of my location business hours .
RTO is coming back every where. RTO hurts employees, business, the environment, and families.
But corporate real estate occupancy is at an all time low and Trump and his billionaire real estate and investor buddies don't want to see the corporate real estate market bust which will spark another pop of other bubbles. This is the bubble economy where protecting only the billionaires is the priority.
There will be no golden age. There wasn't a golden age from 2016-2020 and the same guy is back lying to everyone. Did you think the war in Ukraine would be stopped "day 1". We are in for dark times.
"AKA getting full time pay for doing the bare minimum at home while attending to all your not "unique" issues."
Why do you assume that those who work from home do the bare minimum, even if they have various "issues" to deal with? I would argue that those that do the bare minimum at home would also do the bare minimum in the office.
I personally work more quality hours at home than in the office. At home, I don't have constant interruptions and non-work-related hall conversations.
If there was a legitimate reason for me to sit in a cube for 5 days the I would. But as it is almost everyone I work with is in Europe or India. So going into a cube to do Zoom calls does not make sense. I'm not totally opposed to going back to sitting in a cube, just see nothing that will make me more productive by doing so.
I am currently looking for another company to work for, but little luck. So if it was mandated 5 days then I would go, but then make the people I do calls with meet my schedule. That is until I find another company and then I'm out of here.
"with life situations (childcare, aging parents, etc) that make a 5 day RTO very challenging. Some people will actively start a job search for a role closer to their homes as a result of a 5 day RTO"
That's life. Figure it out like everyone else Not Dells problem. PTO, LOA.... solutions maybe there, just not any that you like..AKA getting full time pay for doing the bare minimum at home while attending to all your not "unique" issues.
simple.
dell literally has zero upside and perks and the downward spiral has no end in sight.
those who can leave will leave.
Anybody know of any Dell employees who were working two jobs during the pandemic. Not rumors but first hand knowledge. I heard rumors but nothing verifiable.
It depends on the tech hiring industry. A lot of employers are holding off on hiring until the see the results of their AI projects. I suspect if the hiring picture improves then quite a few folks will depart. Dell is seeing slowdowns everywhere across enterprise and (especially) consumer, can you blame them? At this point, Dell's traditional tech partner, Intel, may be a dead man walking, and Nvidia's interests are not nearly as aligned. The insatiable appetite for GPUs is papering over a lot of fundamental weakness in the business model.
There are people on the extreme edges of commuting distance (~1.5+ hours each way) with life situations (childcare, aging parents, etc) that make a 5 day RTO very challenging. Some people will actively start a job search for a role closer to their homes as a result of a 5 day RTO. It's not necessarily that they're throwing temper tantrums or being lazy, it's an issue of practicality.
we all got sold a bill of goods here....we're the fools....the joke is on us.
Would I quit? Probably not. But my situation is different than many others. I am confused by the magical 5 day number. I worked from home two days a week before the pandemic.
Some of my colleagues might have to buy a second car for their spouse or partner. There are people who moved during the pandemic since they believed the statment that "remote work is the future" and have a longer commute. That might affect their attitude of Dell as a long term employer.
probably, but not right away, it just will su-k to sit for hours by myself working 2nd shift.
“
I never understood why 5 days is the mandate.”
Because they want more people to quit until they get down to 80k employees with 40k of those being cheap recent college grads
I'd have to move hundreds of miles to be near an office. No way I'm doing that. If they threaten to fire me, yeah, I'll quit before doing RTO. Never have seen a Dell office. Always been remote.
I never understood why 5 days is the mandate. It wasn't even that before covid. Most people worked from home on Friday. Why can't it just go back to the way it was pre-covid. Why is this so difficult.
I recently left, the coming 5 day RTO was my last straw. Got a fully remote job with wya better culture and comp.
Still plenty of remote roles in industry if you're a hard worker and put effort into your job, learning and applying new technologies. If you're a low effort slacker who's spent a decade bootl!cking at Dell and playing politics you're going to be beholden to whatever they decide.
Already in 5 days and I hate life.Thinking of leaving anyway as are many others.
