I’m especially sorry for those for whom it’s a real blow. Once you are back on your feet, and I hope it will be very soon, you’ll be relieved that you left this company behind. It’s taken the wrong direction a while ago, and it will only get worse from here.

The are moving a lot of what they call “indirect” contributors to India. This last layoff took down the entire purchasing dept (mgr as well). They kept a couple buyers whose focus is NPI. They’ll be moving planning…then remainder of supply chain area next. They’ve been slowly gearing up personnel in India for about 6 months.
It is very sad to see a great company being ruined by clueless higher management.
The operations leader moved all production to Asia while signing long term leases for millions of square feet of real estate in San Diego and then payin mllions of dollars to get out of them.
Then they lay off people to compensate for the facilities overhead. And to top it off the manufacturing location strategy is now in trouble with the tarriffs and boot out of China
The government affairs team did a poor job anticipating the political climate and now are caught on the wrong side of USA Chinese and EU governments.. the CEO confessed he did not see the china ban coming.. are you kidding me...
the francis bootlickers are/were the worst! i remember at the company town hall when he said something along the lines of 'the government blocked the grail acquisition but we're gonna forge ahead anyway' and people were saying how they've never been more proud of him!
All companies are heartless. It is the corporate world. Your next company will be too. If you do not know this by now then you are naive. They do not care about your hashtags (other than it being free advertising for them), they do not care how hard you cheer for the CEO (remember all the Francis bootlickers?… how many of them are still here?), they do not care about your family, they do not care about your feelings, and they especially do not care who you are. We are all expendable. Everyone here is just a cog in their machinery. I am speaking strictly about the company. Your direct manager may be more human, but the higher you go up the chain the colder it gets. If there are any lessons to learn this week it would be that we should all just go live our lives, and if we do not have one outside of work, then go get one. Go hug your family and tell them you love them. Do not get so invested with the company in your next role. Give it your absolute best, with the highest work ethic that is in line with your personal values, all while remembering that this company is no different from your last one. We all work for a paycheck so we are able to live our own lives. That is all they should be to us. The Employer/Employee relationship is a purely transactional one completely devoid of any humanity, unlike normal relationships. Anyone that gets pi---d off by what I just said can go kick rocks. I could not care less. I am not saying this for the fake internet points. Some of you need to hear this.
This is a heartless company…run for your life!
I was in the latest purge group of up to 300 workers. I had zero clue it was coming. I joined my regular manager weekly touchpoint and an hr person popped in to let me know that day was my last day. When we were hiring this past year we were only allowed to hire from the new India tower. They’re calling it “right shoring “. It’s outsourcing with a new name. I spent a year training my replacement. All the while the old boys club is strong at the top! I’ve seen people fighting for their life bullied. If you work there, leave. If you don’t, don’t think about joining. This is a sinking ship that needs to go!
I absolutely agree. Prior to joining Illumina, I was in good position. I struggled a lot after getting laid off in January 2024, and I eventually found a position that returned to the outdated technology and income of the previous five years. I'm still having a lot of trouble catching up. In essence, Illumina destroyed my career and provided a terrible severance compensation. The severance package caused severe harm to those who had worked for one or two years.
I was let go in 2023. The prior 11 months leading up to that was a total nightmare. Leadership created such a toxic environment. HR was so corrupt. Preached DEI but didn’t hold up to it.
